One of the greats from the 70's no doubt... But which song really didn't "float yer boat" from this timely release?

So the board is slow...as is the economy...so instead of coming up with some rather expensive "thought provoking" posts...figured I'd carry on in an economical sense and carry on with the last post I had. ;D
Any thoughts on this one?

Definately Cool!
Anyone old enough to remember surfing the AM waves back in the 70's surely had at least a tolerance and in some cases a love for the music of The Carpenters.
It sure beat the hell out of "The Captain & Tenille" in my opinion as Karen's vocals were quite varied in that she, along with her brother could make you feel like you were staring out of a window on a rainy day, and yet lift you up with a track such as "Mr. Postman" or my all time favourite "Only Yesterday".
Colour me sappy, but I'm "cool" with the music!
Thanks Kim

I feel as long as this post made its rounds & just about everyone has given their opinion on the Boss,I'll give mine but first off Kim & Onering, sorry about the but I have praised the Boss in the past on this board whether it was his Seeger tribute album or my praises on his "Darkness...."album or his talents in general & I was pissed seeing this thread. Anyway, here's a snippet from a review I wrote in 2005: "With songs dealing with: Getting wasted in the heat, rat traps filled with soul crusaders, flashing guitars like switchblades, midnight gangs, suicide machines, death traps, suicide traps, and wrapping your legs around one’s velvet rims, one would think Judas Priest was coming out with a new album. But actually this album was released 30 years ago not by Priest, but by none other than “The Boss,” Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. What we have here is an awesome 3 disc set of the classic 'Born to Run' album. Besides which, the set contains 2 DVD’s, one of the making of 'Born To Run' (which also has a short concert from ’73), the other is a phenomenal show from the Hammersmith Odeon 11/18/75." (That was the snippet & now back to reality!) Back in the 70's early 80's I didn't like Springsteen at all.I hated his sound with the horns,Keyboards,& Vocals. Back then all I basically liked was Hard Rock/Metal(although by 1980 I was slowly discovering New Wave/Punk & I was always a big Stones fan). I had a friend at work who was a Springsteen freak & he'd mock Kiss & I'd mock Springsteen. This friend started to really be influenced by my tastes in music & one day he asked me about why I hated Springsteen so I told him my reasons & he said "You love the Stones & David Johansen but you can't like Springsteen?". That kind of hit home & by "Born in the USA" I was a fan.My first album I bought was "Darkness..." & it's still my favorite Boss album. I seen Springsteen live in '85 & the show was great. What sets a Springsteen show different than the rest for me is the overall atmosphere.People aren't only sitting or standing raising their fist, they're dancing in their seats & in the aisles having the time of their lives. I've been to a few concerts by the Beach Boys & it's the same effect. The 2 times I seen George Thorogood live was also the same. Now,I wasn't saying that Bruce concerts rule all, because I'd rather see Kiss or Alice Cooper or Iron Maiden live but going to a Springsteen show is a different kind of concert experience. In 1988 they had a live broadcast on the radio that I taped & was glad I did because the 2nd or third song in they played a rocking version of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom Boom" which even blew me more away than seeing the Boss live.By the last verse Bruce was screaming the lyrics, the guitars were ripping & the band kind of blended in a rythym reminiscent of the old Booker T & the Mg's instrumental hit "Green Onions" which happens to be one of my all-time favorite instrumentals. Well, thats my thoughts on Springsteen. For the record it took me a while to get into Billy Joel too.Petty,I always liked & John Menstrual Cramps was okay too(I really like the song Human Wheels) Great post Bucky!!! I agree. Those lyrics from 30 years ago sound pretty spooky...brrrr! Almost as scary as some of the "mainstream" casual rap music of the day that gets nominated for "album of the year" by some recording faction or another these days actualy promoting and making it "just another day in the life of the average Joe in society" life as we know it. Not sure if there is any message of hope or remorse in the crap these days, but with Springsteen, most of the time, even his "down and out" stlye of music still has a tendancy to lift a listener up simply because of the music. More so with his live performances as well I would suspect...in a slightly more positive fashion? Bruce & Co seem to have, and continue to enjoy themselves creating and performing the music that they are known for and although it's not to everyones liking, it isn't really a depressing, hopeless or ultimately "hate" genre style of music, even when Bruce gets rather melancholy... Speaking of Melancholy, that John Cougar guy is pretty damned good too...(cool segue eh?)...hahaha. To me, Mellencamp is a Springsteen, country cousin, to a degree. Not one on the streets of a large city, but one that sings of the hard times for those living a simpler, somewhat less complicated existance in the midwest, as opposed the daily strife being tolerated by the average inner city citizen?...yet doing so in living with the same levels of frustration and angst that any given individual would feel inside. When Petty is lumped in to the mix, I personaly liken him to a Dylan stlye performer. If the 4 of them were on stage and I had to make 2 teams, I would have to put Dylan & Petty in one camp and Springsteen and Mellencamp in the other...just my opinion. Now Bucky, I have something that will bring this thread back full circle. You mention Mellencamp's "Human Wheels"...also one of my favourites. I also picked up a cd from CD Baby called "A Cup Of Joe" by Mike Garner. Last track on the album is called "Round Round Round". This track is an absolute duplicate of "Human Wheels" yet no credit is given to Mellencamp. No mention of rights or otherwise??? Same beat and a yet a different set of lyrics?...and the tempo is slowed a few iota's as well. I find it kind of interesting. Check it out if you can. *Spell check wasn't working...I apologize in advance for any "Doh's" regarding the "spellun" here. Thanks Kim

Dear Bethany,
Don't concern yourself with an upcoming pregnancy anytime soon. You can rest at ease that this likely won't occur as I am sure that he is practicing "safe sex".
Also, you mention that his interest in church has waned somewhat over the last while, this is a common trait amongst "youngsters" that have been a regular attendee of such gatherings and may be due in part because of a misunderstanding or outright disagreement (tiff) betwixt the priest and your son in general???
3 Hail Mary's and a good therapist should help you through this situation until such time that you can find a place to sit down and discuss this matter first hand with your son...make sure the "chair of choice" is comfy, and not far from the floor. Thanks Kim

Never been a Springsteen fan, or a Kiss fan either for that matter. I remember meeting this huge Springsteen fanatic in the late 70's. We used to talk about bands like Pat Travers, Robin Trower, Rush, Judas Priest, etc. on how they rocked so hard, & he'd always chime in about Springsteen, & no one had ever really listen to him in my group of friends. So, a few months later this guy has a keg & as soon as we stepped in the door he had to throw on Springsteen. Now, you got to realize here, I'm thinking Springsteen rocked as hard as the heavy metal bands I loved in those days (still do). Well, I can't tell you how underwhelmed I was, LOL! Now don't get me wrong, each to their own, & I don't go off on bashing any group unless a question like this is asked, & then I don't really bash (most cases out of respect to the bands devotees), but Springsteen just does not rock my roll. I find a lot of his music way to over produced, or should I say, way to dramatic using every instrument in the book (Born to Run immediately comes to mind). I do know he has less produced albums out, but I'm just soured, especially because he is such a critics darling. If it were not for the national music critic's & journalists who write for mags like "Rolling Stone," Playboy," etc. I do believe that his star would not be so big, or at least rose so fast, especially in the early years. Springsteen is truly a superstar created by critics who think the perfect rock star persona should have that classic fifties & early to mid sixties look & vibe. Lets call it the James Dean/Springsteen syndrome. OK, cool, but it got shoved down my eye retina's so much from reading music publications that my eyes ached to my ears, LOL. These same critics always attacked the bands I loved, so that did not help my liking of Springsteen either. But, when it comes down to it, Springsteen just don't rock hard enough for my tastes, then again I love Fusion Music & Steely Dan, but Springsteen does not even sound remotely close to those either. So in ending, I'll respect every bodies right to like or not like a band, but to carelessly bash a band just for the sake of bashing is wrong. Enough said. Yeah, but Jim... ya have to admit...with all that being said...especially without a break in the paragraph above...(*whew*)... "Waiting on A Sunny Day" surely must move ya to degree? It's a crankin' track...no? It sure is for me. Thanks Kim

Actually, I noticed that Rik had a post here yesterday...so he's still here, but damn...just so quiet...Need a Pickle rebuttal or two...just to keep er on an even keel so to speak...hahaha

I'm sorry but I don't know why the HELL people took it as I was bashing the man so I've been a member of this board since the start & have never bashed Springsteen. In fact if people ever bothered to look at the main site you would know that I've praised the Boss on a couple of reviews I wrote over the past few years. Everyone on this board should know by now that I'm a huge Kiss fan & I have been a Kiss freak for the past 32 years. Naturally, when I found out about the Springsteen tune I found it a bit amusing after hearing that part so I shared it with the forum. In fact in that original post I said I thought the song was cool. I'm not going to go off now & s***k Springsteen's you know what & write some good words about how great I really think he is. I purposely have bashed Hendrix & Zeppelin in the past on the board but that's just my opinion & it doesn't really matter. I used to always get harassed for being a Kiss fan & have heard so many people talk about how they are all horrible musicians in Kiss. It didn't matter to me & it obviously wouldn't matter to the millions & millions of other Kiss fans out there. I have a close friend who is as much of a Springsteen freak as I am a Kiss freak so as soon as I heard that part of the song I sent him an e-mail about it. his response was simple as he knows my sense of humor & his response was: "Kiss my Ass" & my response to those who seem offended to my original post: "Kiss My Ass!" Bucky...my great American, Hab loving friend...I feel pretty bad in that my post was just to bring to light that there are a lot of folks that can either "take or leave" Springsteen...and I just wanted to post a thread to not only find out why, but further the talk of an otherwise great artist in my silly Canuck opinion. My original post to your previous thread, was in fact, tongue in cheek to a degree and smacked of sarcasm. Actually, it wasn't a take on your original thread, it was simply an observation on my behalf to quite possibly dilute any possible negative diatribes regarding the man and his music. I understood entirely, that you were not in any way, shape or form "bashing" the guy. You simply posted a link, (and I thank you for that) cuz I didn't even know that the guy had another release out there? (NOT ONE PERSON TOOK THE TIME TO TELL ME ABOUT IT)!!!!!!!...hahahahahahahahahaha ...I simply put forth a satirical response that kinda back-fired...DOH!!!!! Bucky, yer one of the most open minded folks on this board and it is with humble apologies that I include this message just to make sure that there wasn't, or is a misunderstanding for anyone thinking that I thought YOU were bashing Springsteen...You weren't and you didn't. I just extended upon a topic and an artist...for the main reason stated...and also, as Spacel0rd has eluded to, the board is rather quiet of late and figured I'd do my part to at least originate one original post during my brief visit here yesterday. AND...for what it's worth, I would like to state here and now that I respect Spacl0rd's take on Bruce...it's his call and he's simply stating his opinion and has the ultimate right to do so...(we just need to work on him a little more.... )..... Let's face it, I've went on waaaayyy to many times on Bon Jovi...am I right?...No, it's simply my opinion, and although I tend to see things through a different set of glasses at times, it doesn't make it so. ...Now, what's all this crap about KISS???... I heard that Springsteen sold the rights to "I Was Made For Loving You" way back in the late 70's and Gene sawed off part of his tongue in return for the favour...any truth to the rumours? ;D Thanks Kim

In response to Bucky's thread about the similarities to KISS, I felt the need to pose the question...why do so many here hammer Bruce?
The man in my opinion is a great artist and has put out some otherwise great and fantastic music over the years.
I don't understand why he gets "dissed" the way he does here at times???
In my opinion, the guys vocals are fantastic, the lyrics are those that others want to record and have...only to their benefit...(think Manfred Mann, Status Quo, Dave Edmunds)...
Springsteen hasn't lost a step, since he first stepped onto the worlds musical stage...and in fact has refined and defined his musical prowess to the point where even if he doesn't get the airplay he once was privileged to, he still is considered one of the best performers going...and his live shows are proof of this. Any tickets left over for a pittance before any of Springsteen's gigs?
Deemed the hardest working man in the rock world at one point, he still seems to hold that title in my eyes from not only his album releases but his concert appearances.
It's hard for me to accept that this guy is overlooked, and deemed a lesser musician by some that prefer to give in to the hip hop, rap, rattle and shake techno crap delivered by the stars of the day that most likely weren't even born before the Boss hit the stage?
What is it?...too political? Too gruff sounding? Not loud enough? Too many instruments? To Old?, Too cool? Not cool enough? Doesn't show up up on Entertainment Tonight enough???...........seriously....I don't get it?
The man, his group and his overall musical attitude speaks volumes, at least to me, and is one of the last true, original, honest vestiges of what music really means.
Anyway, flame away...curious to find out why Bruce really gets hammered for his work?
Thanks Kim

WOW!... I also couldn't believe that the drummer sounded like a guy playing the drums!...and the vocals sounded like a guy singing a song...nevermind that the guitar sounded pretty much like any guitar sound I heard in all the other songs that I've ever heard...kinda like a "twang twang twang" kinda sound!!! Starts off sounding like an ELO track too eh? It also had a "start" and a "finish" to it as well and clocked in at 8:01 which is similar to some Zep tracks... Bottom line, Springsteen used the same technology to get this track through my speakers...PLAGIARIST!!! Geeezus H. Cheeeerist...the man outta be shot! That one little part consisting of a 5.8 second sound byte did sound like KISS...it also rears it's beautiful little head at 3:30 once again the song as well...it's obvious the man is a "double dipper" Ahh...damn...are there no heroes left...*sigh* Think I'll go and listen to "The Rising"...see if I can find some plagiarism on that one...if I'm not back in 20 minutes...(because I love and need to listen to it 3 times)...that'll mean I couldn't find any... and if I do...I wouldn't share it with ya's anyway...so there...hahahahahahahahahahahahaha Thanks Kim

Hey Kim, we get it. You don't like George Bush. Yeah, I guess I can stop now huh?...haha I'll admit, I didn't like the guy from the get go, and after 8 years, the man didn't give me any real reason to change my mind. I had the same feelings about one of our past Prime Ministers, that being, the ever lovable and wonderful Brian Mulroney. The man pretty much sold our country out, taxed our arses to the hilt, and a puppet to the Regan administration, and to this day still claims to be the best thing to ever happen to Canada, even being so callous as to wish his successor, Kim Campbell, a conservative no less, the first female Prime Minister, well, by telling her to "keep her pecker up". What a cool leader this guy was. I would like to say that as a Canadian, I am really impressed and proud to see that such a charismatic, personable, and peaceful man has been voted in to take over the reigns of the great country that the USA truly is. I can hear in his words that he is genuine and one that wants change for the better of all of us on the world stage, not buy bullets, bombs and threats of war, but through diplomacy, understanding and peace which is the ultimate goal for all of us on this little piece of real estate we like to call home. Will it be easy? of course not? Will his decisions be deemed right by all that voted for him...or those that didn't?...Probably not...but I like his attitude thus far. For what it's worth, the USA has a statesman, world leader, second to none at this point in my opinion and the hope that he and hopefully his administration can stick with and possibly deliver may be fodder for a much needed positive change that our North American and world needs at this point in history. I'm not going to dwell further on this...however, I must congratulate all of those in the USA for making a great choice in electing a leader of this calibre for your great nation. I for one, as a foreigner, am envious in your choice. Had he been a Canadian and elected here in our country, he would have received the same applause and admiration as he has received in yours... When people in other countries stand up and celebrate the new American president, on their own turf...you know you've done well! Well done America! You have not only made yourselves proud, but have given the rest of the world a lot more to hope for and be proud of. I apologize here and now if I have pissed anyone else off during a Bush rant, I hope it wasn't taken on a personal level...just spoken as a freind...wanting you to know how I felt...no harm, no foul I hope. It's over, we move on and I have a sneaky suspicion that you won't be hearing much from me on the political front for at least the next 4 years... Now...if we can just get rid of that Harper dude here in Canuckville...? I think an Ignatieff / Obama alliance would work quite nicely for North America...haha Thanks Kim

So... Any thoughts on the out going president? Did anyone catch any of his speeches over the last few nights? I thought his take on the New Orleans situation in regards to the "helicopter drivers" was pretty good... My wife and I are "car pilots" and we somehow related to what he was saying. Was it a C or a C+ that he was rated as in terms of his educational accomplishments? Thanks Kim

I was going to post this as a "one of" sort of post, but knowing how much everyone here reeeeeally loves polls... ;D... I thought it best to do it this way I'm simply grabbing an otherwise, somewhat popular release and putting it up for votes to find out from the fans of the release, just which track it is that they find the least appealing...or even one that could have been left off the list or even replaced with a better track from the sessions of the same period. Another reason for doing it this way, is to provide others here to create their own poll...including an album of their choice...granted, it means you have to start one yourself...kinda gives you something to do when you tune into this great site now doesn't it? ;D Without further adieu, I offer up ZZ Top's "Eliminator" for consideration. Although this successful release for the hirsute trio can be considered somewhat overrated by some, considering the amount of airplay at least 3 of the tracks received, and a drastic change in style and content for the earlier fans, I have to say that it was a milestone for the group. With that being said however, which of the 11 tracks would you consider a clunker. Hell, I'll even chime in on my own post...and go with "I Need You Tonight"...just doesn't fit for an otherwise out & out consistently rocking album! Perhaps the boys wanted to include a taste of "Blue Jean Blues" with this one...but it just doesn't cut it for me??? Standout tracks for me are "Thug" and "Got Me Under Pressure" Hell, even "I Got The Six" and "Bad Girl" work wonders on this album! Thanks Kim

I also listened to "Big Smoke" by Kim Mitchell a few times. I have that album, "Aural Fixations" and it is a pretty darned fine release from that other "Kim" Canuck. "World's Such A Wonder" and of course my fave track on the album, "Some Folks" really stand out. The other single release from this one, "America" is pretty good as well, but I think they played it to death upon it's release and I tired of it quicker than the other tracks. *Note the gal in the upper right corner enjoying a "sodi pop"... now if you have the album, flip it over...the cropped image no longer looks like she's enjoying the same thing now does it? Hence the blatant play on words using "Aural" instead of "Oral"...ohhh my virgin ears...haha Actually, I believe I had "aural sex" this morning...my wife got up and stubbed her toe on the bed...all I HEARD her say was "F*ck me"!!! Badda boom...tishhh!!!... Doh! Thanks Kim
