It seemed like in the 70's & 80's musicians from bands really stood out.Magazines would have annual polls for best Singer, guitarist,bass,drums,keyboards,horns...etc & most of the nominations were household names like Jimmy Page,Ritchie Blackmore,Ace Frehley,Gene Simmons,Bruce Springsteen,Geddy Lee,John Bonham,Pete Townshend,Keith Richards,John Entwhistle,Rob Halford,Bruce Dickinson,Carl Palmer, Rick Wakeman,Roger Waters... & the list goes on. It seems like the 90's - the present you mostly just here of the bands & even though there are some good musicians out there you don't see much of individualism spotlights within bands. You do have a few like Jack White,Dave Grohl,Dave Navarro to name a couple but to me there aren't many Superstar standouts. So...Who are today's new top musicians that can carry the torch of Rock & Roll into future generations?

Since the 90s? Well...that's 20 yrs worth of artists, so some of the guys on my list are not too young anymore. Some, maybe, even seen their hey-day. Hell, Dave Navarro (who u mentioned) goes all the way back to 1987.
When it comes to songwritting, musicianship or just simply being seen as a rock icon... Jack White was the 1st person i thought of. But, also:
Tom Morello Adam Duritz Josh Homme Trey Anastasio Eddie Vedder Mike McCready Chris C0rnell Billy Corgan Jimmy Chamberlin Kid Rock Maynard James Keenan Billie Joe Armstrong Flea Trent Reznor Chris Martin

Part of the problem Rap, Hip Hop and teen pop is so prevalent now. People still discuss these things and there are magazines but instead of rockers they discuss Eminem, Outkast, T.I., Lil' Wayne, Akon and The Jonas Brothers.
As far as rockers and musicians go you named the first three that came to my mind, Navarro, Jack White and Dave Grohl. Others that come to mind are Flea, Slash, Dave Mathews, Possibly Serj Tankian. If we ignore his latest release maybe Chris Cornell. Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci and John Myung. I know everyone hates him but Chad Kroeger of Nickelback is a rocker of a sort and sells millions of albums and sells outs stadiums. I don't know if I'd really want to call him a "top" musician though.

I can agree with whom you guys mentioned & most of those rockers will carry the torch but it just seemed that through the 60's,70's & 80's a lot of the bands didn't just have one standout member. Bands like the Who,Beatles,Pink Floyd,Aerosmith,Kiss, Rolling Stones,Motley Crue,Poison,Ratt,Guns & Roses,Metallica, Anthrax,Rush...etc the list could go on where just one individual from a band wasn't getting the only publicity for the band. Hell, I can remember Robin Crosby & Warren Demartini on the cover of Hit Parader in the mid-80's. That's kind of the point I was getting at.
Pete this was a good Point:
"Part of the problem Rap, Hip Hop and teen pop is so prevalent now. People still discuss these things and there are magazines but instead of rockers they discuss Eminem, Outkast, T.I., Lil' Wayne, Akon and The Jonas Brothers. "
My 15 year old nephew is into new music but loves a lot of the classic rock stuff. He's playing guitar in a band now & he loves Queen especially their first album which surprised the hell out of me. He loves every song on that album but doesn't know who Brian May is!! I only see him once every couple of months & he always loves talking music with me because I'll go into detail with some story about a band or song he asks me about but I was floored about Brian May

Just read this one... But now I´m drunk.... Nightmare...working,drinking... Kim, help out my Canadian friend! Sorry Dreamtide ole buddy, the puter was offline at the time of your post and I was most likely immersed in the "Dirty Harry" flic I was watching for the umpteenth time...gotta love the line..."well DO YA PUNK??"...haha As far as the top musicians of today goes, I must admit defeat on that front as I'm probably the last person to offer up any names at this point? Oh, I'm sure that they are out there, but damned if I've heard of them. Pete raises an excellent point and I tend to agree. Is this a good thing for music? Only time will tell and history may prove that in 20 years from now, the artists that Pete and others have mentioned may very well be the time honoured classics when that time comes...who knows? Who am I to belittle, degrade or citicise the music of today? For what it's worth though, it gives me a good feeling when I hear Bucky mention that his 15 year old nephew considers Queen's debut album as an inspiration and considers it a classic. Bucky, nurture this boy...as he appears to have great taste in the R&R classics. Consider that the lad wasn't even born when Freddie left us, he still appears to know a great release when he hears one! Closest call I have is for a group like Collective Soul, who really isn't a "new group" but a seasoned collection of solid musicians that have arguably put out a few consistently good albums...yet, as Bucky has eluded to, IMO, not one of the members are a stand out to any degree? As another example, I wonder what ever happened to the likes of the young Blues "phenom's" that came out a number of years ago in Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Jonny Lang...(yeah, Google both names and see how many different spelling's that YOU come up with)... I thought that either one of these two talented artists would have most certainly by now have made a much bigger impact on the music scene than they have thus far? Something to ponder here, and I'm probably stating the obvious to a degree, but perhaps we have been witness to the "waterering down" of music overall in the last 15 years or so, especially the last decade specifically with the "computer age" and the inherant use of talent shows that will pluck an artist from a line up based on popular votes from a select group of "cell phone groupie wannabe's"? They get their votes, win the competition, cut an album and then ride off into the sunset. Hey? where's Clay Aiken?...oh yeah, he had a misunderstanding with a "closet door" and that's been his biggest contribution to music since!!! Wow...no offense to this much celebrated artist, but hopefully he doesn't show up sing'n for his dinner on the next ocean cruise I wanna take! Back in the day, talented artists had to work hard, ply their trade and natural born talents in order to sway a record company to take a chance on them and their specific music. These days, anyone with a SEARS, synth drum kit and a $129.00 Zeller's brand key board can cut a track or two, slap it onto You Tube and awaaaaaay we go! It is also glaringly apparant that radio has since left a lot of those that have cut an album and even released a single, to die a slow and horrible death simply because the industry has been taken over by a bunch of robots and no longer see it fit to at least give these groups or artists a chance. Instead, collect 1000 kids off of the street, depending on the demographics desired, and play them a listing of the top 40 songs that these corporate weasels THINK that the rest of the country will want to hear for the next 48 - 52 weeks of the year until they get to do it all over again...kinda like following the instructions on a bottle of shampoo..."Rinse, Repeat"? I guess that's one reason why I remain a fan of groups like The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC and even those other guys...uhmmm Status Quo, YEAH, that's it!!!...(you just knew I'd weave them into the conversation somehow now didn'tcha!!!...haha). These artists may not be breaking any new ground in terms of "far out and funky" new techniques and ideas when it comes to the popular vote, but for me personally, I can count on these folks to continue to deliver the goods when it comes to great music on their own terms...besides, they've broken trail many years ago...so where are the new "trail blazers" of today? A lot of us have also heard the story back in the day that held rumours about the guys backing up Van Halen and AC/DC, being sooo much better during a gig, but just never got the break that they needed to cut a deal...never to be heard from again in any way shape or form other than a few impromptu gigs at the local "Gulp & Blow" in a small "Anytown - USA - Pop. 3500 town in the midwestern States? I'm still keeping a good thought however on the future of the music that I have come to love and know over the years and I still hear echoes of the not so distant past in some music that I do get exposure to...and I hope that someday soon, those that have it, and feel it in their heart of hearts, will once again pick up their instrument of choice and play the damned music the way in which their feelings intend it to be played and the with the passion that can and will be embraced by those of us that are considered fans... Besides, it's all relative...because in 10 years from now, I'll be the guy sitting there, drooling uncontrollably, at a social function when the new Gwen Stefani track comes on and I'll be yelling at my wife to roll me out onto the dance floor, arthritic clawed hands, clutching my cane, lamenting..."I wanna hear "Jumpin' Jack Flash"...as they keep rolling me over to the buffet table for something to eat at 10 pm before they load my sorry arsed, colostomy bag riddened carcass into the next available taxi home! Happy New Year Dreamtide!!!!!!! *Edited to add that the Spell Check" feature wasn't working for some reason and if you think that I'm going back to check all that drivel for mistakes...you're sadly mistaken...* ;D Thanks Kim
