Irish rocker Bono has been named and shamed as the Worst Investor in America for his backing of troubled smart telephone maker Palm Inc.
The U2 frontman and bosses at his private-equity business Elevation Partners ploughed nearly $500 million into the debt-riddled firm, the maker of Treo and Centro smart phones, in December 2008.
But his gamble has cost him dear and the downturn in the global economy has caused stock shares in Palm Inc. to plummet 35 per cent from January to February.
And the huge loss has landed Bono the dishonour by financial journal 24/7 Wall Street.
Editors highlight "an unprecedented string of disastrous investments which even bad luck could not explain" as the reason for choosing Bono, adding that California-based Elevation Partners is "arguably the worst run institutional fund of any size in the United States".

Attention Deficit Delirium: So what’s coming up for Chickenfoot then?
Hagar: "I’m pretty much going to wait for Chickenfoot now. I was asked if I wanted to go out and do some [solo] shows this summer and was offered a great package with somebody that I thought would be really great. I thought I’d put Mike in the band and we’d go out and do it for fun, then just this morning I woke up and said, “I’m not going to do that. I’m going to wait for Chickenfoot.” It’s something special. I might go out and play 25 or 30 concerts this summer, and if something were to happen with Chickenfoot in the fall, I might not feel like touring because I just toured. I want to save it for my passion right now, just like I said when we first started talking. I’ve got a passion for Chickenfoot. I woke up one morning and said, “I want to play with Joe Satriani, Chad Smith” — who I had been jamming with a lot at the Cabo — “and Mikey.” I wanted to put together this band, and I was so overwhelmed with it. It’s all I wanted to do. I did it, it worked and I want to do it some more now. I want to keep that passion and not burn myself out on something else. Right now that’s my band."
Attention Deficit Delirium: Do you think you guys are going to record anymore stuff?
Hagar: "Oh yeah. In April we’re supposed to go in the studio. Chad has a little window from the Chili Peppers, and we’re going to go in and start recording a second album. We’re not going to rush it, we’re going to start. Joe and I are always writing. We’re definitely going to try to do it again."

Neil Peart of Rush says the band don't need induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – it would mean more to the fans, while the band's induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame on Sunday means much more because it recognises their songwriting ability.
The drummer, who's also the main writer behind the prog trio's output, tells the Canadian Press: "We really don't care. It matters a lot to the fans to have that validation, but it doesn't matter to me.
"We've got the success and respect, and the opportunity to do exactly what we wanted for 35 years. Do we need someone to make us feel better? Not at all.
"Being in the Canadian Hall of Fame – that's ten, a hundred times, more than being on some critics' list.
"The distinction is the songwriter part. We've been appreciated as musicians and performers, but not for the craft of the thing. Praise from our peers as songwriters means a great deal."
Rush are being inducted on the basis of five leading tracks: Limelight, Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions and Closer to the Heart. The ceremony on Sunday will feature Alexisonfire playing Tom Sawyer, Jacob Moon performing Subdivisions and Les Claypool of Primus doing Spirit – which he describes as "a bitch to play".
Peart says Rush are continuing to think hard about the future of their output, after having concluded the album format is dead and unlikely to be a valid format for them in the future.
They've considered recording a handful of tracks, releasing them and touring on the back of them, rather than following the traditional album-tour cycle, and Peart believes it's still an option.
"We're doing pre-production on two songs just now. We'll put them together and if they turn out well, we'll maybe release them. It would be an interesting way to shake it up. But there's nothing I can confirm yet – these things are immensely complicated. All I can say is we're considering that."

Picklehead probably could answer better than me but I think they got lumped in with all the hair bands and pop metal when they were really more of a modern (at that time) 70s style blues based hard rock band. I've always liked Tesla and they are great live. I also really liked a lot their 2004 release "Into The Now" which was largely ignored. ...and this one that just came out in October is really starting to grow on me.

Cheap Trick got the 2010-11 season of "Austin City Limits" off to a rocking start on Thursday night with a 17-song SXSW-week taping at the program's headquarters on the University of Texas campus.
Starting with a special intro tape that includes a Japanese DJ Homer Simpson and a demure woman's voice formally welcoming "the best f***ing rock band in the world," Cheap Trick came out roaring with "Way of the World" and "When the Lights Are Out," mixing hits ("I Want You to Want Me," "Surrender," "Voices," "Dream Police") with less- celebrated catalog gems such as "Baby Loves to Rock" and a particularly generous selection from 2009's "The Latest," including "Closer, the Ballad of Burt and Linda," "Sick Man of Europe," "Miracle" and "Miss Tomorrow."
Pick-tossing guitarist Rick Nielsen was in jocular form throughout the show, hawking the 8-track version of "The Latest," quipping about "'Austin City Limits' 36th year, Cheap Trick's 36th year -- this is the first time they've been lucky enough to have us" and noting that the group has "been in a lot of buildings before they've been torn down. "ACL" is moving to a new studio facility in downtown Austin later this year.
But things turned serious when Cheap Trick paid tribute to the late Alex Chilton, whose Big Star song "In the Street" was the basis for the group's theme song for TV's "That '70s Show." After Nielsen noted that "a good friend of ours passed away," the group fused "Sleep Forever" with "Heaven Tonight" before playing "That '70s Song." Nielsen's son Dax sat in on drums for an ailing Bun E. Carlos at the taping, while two keyboardists -- Magic Christian and Jellyfish alumnus Roger Manning, were along to help fill out the sound.
Cheap Trick's "ACL" episode will premiere in October. Meanwhile, the group is scheduled to perform a free public SXSW concert Friday night at Austin's Auditorium Shores.

Experience's Valleys Of Neptune enters The Billboard 200 at #4, putting the rock legend back in the top five nearly 40 years after he died at the tragically young age of 27. No other artist has cracked the top five this long after his death. Elvis Presley is in second place. His Elvis: 2nd To None debuted at #3 in October 2003, a little more than 26 years after his death..
Hendrix is the second music legend to make the top five posthumously in the past two weeks. Johnny Cash bowed at #3 two weeks ago with American VI: Ain't No Grave. But Cash died less than seven years ago. It's more remarkable for an artist who died four decades ago to make significant chart waves..
Valleys Of Neptune is, incredibly, Hendrix's 34th posthumous album to make The Billboard 200..
Hendrix was a star for just three years, from June 1967, when he played the Monterey International Pop Festival, to September 1970, when he died in London of a drug overdose. The guitar hero had four top five albums in his lifetime. This is his third top five album since his death. It follows The Cry Of Love, which hit #3 in 1971, and Crash Landing, which reached #5 in 1975..
Four of Hendrix's catalog albums re-enter The Billboard 200 this week. 1967's Are You Experienced? bows at #44, followed by 1968's Electric Ladyland at #60, the 1997 compilation First Rays Of The New Rising Sun at #63 and 1968's Axis: Bold As Love at #67..
Experienced? first cracked The Billboard 200 on Aug. 26, 1967. It was only the 10th highest new entry of the week (!), opening at an unimpressive #190. The album took 59 weeks to reach its #5 peak in October 1968. This week's debut of Valleys Of Neptune gives Hendrix a nearly 41-1/2 year span of top five albums.

Def Leppard just sounds a lot better and has moved me a lot more than that other group ever has. Thanks Kim Yeah Def Leppard for me too. I don't know why I posted the poll the article at Billboard got me thinking I guess. I remember when I was in HS coming home to watch 1-800-DialMTV and Adam Curry announcing that for the first time in something like 18 monts Def Leppard or Poison don't have the number one spot.
