For the record, KISS does indeed sell out big stadiums. Maybe not in the United States, but the rest of the planet is a different story. In the U.S., KISS performs to capacity crowds in the major league arenas. I recently saw KISS on a Tuesday night, in the middle of the Christmas shopping season, at an 18,000 seat arena... The arena was filled to about 98% capacity. To me, I didn't take Simmons' challenge as a challenge of attendance, but rather a challenge of who kicks ass on stage and blows the minds of the audience. Maybe I am wrong? I agree Gene probably did mean ass kicking. Kiss definitely has the explosion and fire advantage and realistically probably kick more rock ass but if was attendance.... U2 sold out Soldier Field (65,000) two nights in a row last fall. I got a scalped nose bleed seats for the second one. I saw kiss a few years back and had really good seats. It's like Apple and Oranges. The U2 show was massive though. It reminded me of Pink Floyd who I saw at Soldier in '94 but Pink Floyd beat Kiss and U2 combined!

The Irish juggernaut had a huge year in 2009, making more than $108 million. They made nearly twice as much as the No. 2 man on the list, occasional Wellington resident Bruce Springsteen. Billboard determined the top money-makers list by taking into account music sales, on-demand streams, songwriting royalties and fees and touring revenue. U2’s success in 2009 included a deal with Live Nation that gave them a good share of money from touring, merchandising and from the group’s U2.com Web site. Songwriting money stayed in house, as while various members contribute, the band rarely does outside work. Springsteen, who made more than $57 million, was followed in the top five by Madonna ($47 million), AC/DC ($43 million) and Britney Spears ($38 million). and what? KISS has put out two albums in the last ten years? Who's resting on what? ;D I say U2 wins ;D

Some comparisons I found at Billboard that inspired me to do a poll. In the '80s and into the '90s, however, Def Leppard and Poison each enjoyed quite a run in their hit-making primes. The careers of the bands each predate the advent of Nielsen SoundScan sales data in 1991, but let's look at how each has sold since then. Since 1991, Def Leppard has sold more than twice that of Poison: 16,566,000 albums. Its best-selling title in that period is also a best-of collection, 1995's "Vault - Greatest Hits 1980-1995," with sales to date of 4,908,000. According to the Recording Industry of America (RIAA), Def Leppard handily leads Poison in album sales, 35 to 14.5 million, sums which encompass the bands' entire careers. Some deeper comparisons, chart-wise? Billboard Hot 100 hits: Def Leppard 19, Poison 12 Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hits: Def Leppard 15, Poison 10 Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits: Poison 6, Def Leppard 4 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits: one each (Def Leppard "Love Bites," Poison "Every Rose Has Its Thorn"), both in 1988 Mainstream Rock hits: Def Leppard 21 (including 13 top 10s, three of which reached No. 1), Poison 8 (including two top 10s) So, with Def Leppard ahead in all but one of the above comparisons, you easily win bragging rights over your friend. Since their last Hot 100 appearances in the '90s, both have acts remained relevant thanks to touring and/or Bret Michaels' celebreality career post-Poison's '80s heyday. Both have even paired with two of today's top female stars. Def Leppard teamed with Taylor Swift on an episode of CMT's "Crossroads" in 2008, and the episode's subsequent release topped Billboard's Video Music Sales chart last July. Michaels recently debuted a new song, "Nothing to Lose," featuring Miley Cyrus. She's due to return the favor by covering "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," with Michaels, on her next album. "Miley got ahold of me and wanted to re-cut 'Every Rose...,' " Michaels recently told billboard.com. "When we were in the studio, I said, 'Do you want to hear some of my new tracks?' She said 'I'd love to,' and I played her 'Nothing to Lose' and she fell in love with it and said she'd love to sing on the song. I was like, 'That'd be killer!'"

BLACK SABBATH guitar legend Tony Iommi (HEAVEN & HELL) spoke with Andy Coleman from Birminghampost.net recently about a number of topics.
On singer Ronnie James Dio (who has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer): "Ronnie’s doing better, he’s been responding well to treatment. He’s very positive and has been in the studio in LA this week doing a bit of singing. He has to fly to Dallas (from his Los Angeles home) for chemotherapy every two weeks and has injections daily in his stomach.’’

No....and they were actually pretty big for a little while. Whitecross Rez Deliverance X-Sinner Shout (although they LOOKED every bit as silly as Stryper) Barren Cross DeGarmo & Key All were better than Stryper......and I was a late comer to the Christian Rock scene. Someone with more knowledge could probably rattle off a dozen more names. I just mentioned Petra because I actually saw them in concert when I was in Junior High with a church group. I used to listen to their album "On Fire" quite a bit. In the 90s I used to like DC Talk's 'Jesus Freak'

It always bugged me that Stryper became the face of Christian Rock/Metal. There were MUCH better Christian Rockers out there in the '80's and early '90's.........not so much nowadays though. Like Petra?

Gene Simmons has thrown down the gauntlet to The Rolling Stones and U2 to compete with Kiss as the (admittedly self-proclaimed) hottest band in the land. Talking to XFM, Simmons said: “I would love to play on the same stage as U2, the Stones and anybody out there who considers themselves a world champion. You come on up on that stage with us, baby. Show me what you got, and then we’ll show you what the big boys do.”
This is perhaps the greatest piece of rock band duelling since Twisted Sister threatened Manowar and Hanoi Rocks with a punch-up in London’s Covent Garden nearly 30 years ago!

I found that sometimes the people in the music department at Barnes & Noble are pretty knowledgeable. They usually have people who work exclusively in the music department. The ones I've talked with at least know about the month's releases and a few actually know what they're talking about.
But I rarely buy cds anymore. I love Amazon. Can't stand ITunes.

Kiss were forced to drop four songs from their tiny club show in London on Tuesday, it has emerged.
Confetti guns used at the end of set-closer Rock and Roll All Nite generated so much carbon dioxide that the band were left gasping for breath, and considered not performing any encores.
After a short break they came back on stage and finished the show with Detroit Rock City. But that meant they'd played just 12 songs, when they'd rehearsed 16 the previous night.
Frontman Paul Stanley says: "Once the confetti cannons went off, we barely made it off stage. None of us could breathe. Each of us thought we were the only one until we saw each other. Pretty scary and there was no way we could continue. We came out for the encores but couldn't get past one."
Video recordings of the encore shows Stanley struggling to complete the performance, while it's also reported bassist Gene Simmons nearly collapsed through lack of breath.
Stanley adds: "Still, all in all it was an amazing night. It left many people breathless..."
Just 500 tickets were made available for the concert in London's Islington Academy, with 300 guests making it the smallest show Kiss have played in nearly a quarter of a century.
