When this was an active board, I had quite the reputation for NOT liking The Beatles. A year and a half ago, I annexed a 700 CD collection which included nearly all of The Beatles' albums on CD and, much like the other bands in this collection I didn't like, I gave them a good and fair listen. Now, I still don't particularly LOVE them, BUT..... I "get" them totally. Listening to their CDs at my own leisure without anyone standing next to me telling me how great they are and how one can't possibly not like them, I found that I actually like more of their songs than I hate and even the ones I still hate, I mainly hate them because of friends and Classic Rock radio overplaying them.
In this same CD collection that I annexed were EVERY Rolling Stones' record on CD and I took a long, hard listen to all of them as well. In my dislike for The Beatles, I often said that I liked the Rolling Stones way better. I still kinda do. I still prefer the Rolling Stones' hits from the 1960's over The Beatles' hits from the 1960's (it's kinda foolish to compare other eras of the Rolling Stones to the Beatles IMO). However, beyond the hits, those Rolling Stones' records from the '60's were unlistenable garbage, they really were/are. In comparison to The Beatles, while I may not like a lot of The Beatles' catalog, those songs and those albums as a whole were listenable on the whole. Rolling Stones' albums from the same time period simply were not. So, I definitely "get" The Beatles in that respect. I mean, those Beatles' albums were far and away better than the Stones' when it came to putting out albums of a consistent, listenable quality and if the Stones were their closest competition, then I guess that says a shitload about how much better The Beatles were than anyone else at the time. Still doesn't mean I have to LOVE them and I won't be tuning in to my local Classic Rock station's "Breakfast With The Beatles" any time soon. But I certainly have a different perspective on them and appreciate having their music now in my collection. I may even do a "Best Of The Beatles" mix-CD some day
