Now before we start going ape-shit on the Kimbaman here...haha I ask this question for 2 reasons... (1) They seem to hit the charts pretty hard and pretty fast. (2) They seemed to have a lot of screaming gals back in the day because of their antics, and music of course to the degree where a lot of the guys that heard them for the first time maybe felt somewhat "threatened" by the aforemantioned attributes from this group. I'll admit, that back in 75' when we were into Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Nazareth, Skynrd, Queen, ZZTop and the like, KISS seemed kind of strange to us...at least in my neck of the woods and I couldn't help but chuckle at the folks that would laugh at me at the time for liking BTO, but would cut me some slack in saying, "welllllll...at least he's not into joining the KISS Army"... ;D In fact, back then, you were "cool" if you liked Elton John or David Bowie...but if you mentioned KISS...you'd pretty much get beat up at any dance and not be invited out for a "toke", let alone a piss warm beer out of yer buddys trunk. Again, no harm, no foul, just putting it out there? Gotta thank Jesse for the original post...I'm thinking my next thread will be entitled... "Is Adelle Considered a Boy Band"?........ Thanks Kim

While Kiss did do quite well with the groupies over the years, in their early days ('73-'76) they just wanted to gain interest overall. Paul was talking to the crowd about getting high, partying,& drinking alcohol while Gene was breathing fire & spitting blood. I don't think this was all aimed at getting the girls all hot for them. In '76 they scored huge with the AM radio crowd with Beth but that really was a fluke as it was the B side to the Detroit Rock City 45 single. That album "Destroyer" put into motion that Kiss was more than a rock band... they were also basically Larger than Life superheroes! ...and that began the merchandising & comic book superhero band still kicking ass on their albums but now they were also appealing to kids.
As the mid to late 80's rolled on Kiss did try to jump on the chick band wagon after seeing the rise in bands such as Poison,Bon Jovi, Motley Cruel...etc. The thing was that they were aging & kind of looked a bit ridiculous in bright colored spandex singing songs like Let's Put the X in Sex, Tears are Falling, Uh All Night,Reason to Live, & Forever. It was obvious they were aiming their singles at the female crowd who were buying up the aforementioned bands I listed. Still other tracks off of those 3 mid/late 80's albums featured some real kick ass tunes & by the early 90's the released one of their heaviest albums with "Revenge".
I can't wait for their new album 'Monster' to be released as it promises to be heavier than their last album 'Sonic Boom & I thought that was a great rocking album. So once again no,no,no to Kiss even being a "Heavy" boy band

Again, I was young and not really into the Rock music "scene", but I don't recall too many girls into Kiss when I was growing up. Then again, Kiss' hey day was when I was in Elementary School.....so what do I know. By Junior High, Kiss had taken off the make up.......well, face paint, they still wore make up, but more like Poison and, uh, well, Vixen. Anyhow, by then, I don't recall ANYONE liking Kiss.

Definitely not Kiss. Most of the guys in my neighborhood were much more into them than the girls were.
Much like Alice Cooper.
Of course they had their groupies (who would be groupies for whoever was coming to town the next week also) and plenty of them, but Kiss didn't have all the girls feinting (At least not here in the northeast)

God no they werent a boy band. They were put together like any other group of that era. Thru newspaper adds & other music press. Not by some label.

HA! I can relate to Kim's thoughts about KISS. When I noticed them back in the day, I thought they were flippen' stupid. Weird AND stupid to put it exactly.
Heavy Boy Band?!?! Oh gawd no.
The buzz about them was talk about everything but their music. Wierdos in art class would fuss over how the KISS make-up was to be reproduced... I wasn't impressed with anything from KISS and was put off by their weird fans. I don't get KISS at all. I've softened my views of KISS the past couple of years because of Gene's show, "Gene Simmon's Family Jewels". He's totally cool and likeable. If the standard of measure of success in Rock'N Roll is based upon the total in your checking account and how much your Band's name is worth, Gene is top-dog. An accomplishment worth noting.
