I was at a Rush concert at Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo, NY 1980 & while the headlining trio put on a spectacular performance promoting their ‘Permanent Waves’ album, it was the opening act, Max Webster, that left an impact on me as they were punching in their cocaine colored computer cards & coding cosmic zipper skies.
Almost 30 years later, legendary Canadian guitarist Kim Mitchell (Formerly of Max Webster) & current Toronto DJ took the stage on a rainy Friday night in Lockport, NY along with hard-hitting drummer Chris Sutherland & longtime bassist Peter Fredette Fortunately, by the time Mitchell took the stage the rain had calmed down. Mitchell opened the show with a short instrumental before the band kicked out “That’s the Hold” from his 1986 Juno Award winning album ‘Shakin’ Like a Human Being’. Mitchell then launched into “Rocklandwonderland” from his double platinum ‘Rockland’ album. The sound was phenomenal throughout the show & Kim’s guitar playing was dead on as the band rocked through 18 songs including: “Ain’t Life Amazing”,” Dream Thieves”, “Easy to Tame”, Pure as Gold”, “Lemon Wedge”, ”I am a Wild Party”, “Here in My Shoes”, “Rock n Roll Duty”, “Patio Lanterns”, ”Go for a Soda” & the beautiful duo vocals of Kim & Peter on “All We Are”. Kim also revisited his Max Webster days by playing “Million Vacations”, “Oh War” (which was a huge crowd favorite), & the classic that pushed the crowd over the edge… “Battle Scar”. The band played one encore which is the rocking Kim Mitchell anthem “Lager & Ale” & as the song ended the Kim Mitchell Band burst into the ending instrumental section of Max Webster’s “Beyond the Moon” from their ‘Mutiny up My Sleeve’ album.
