Joan Jett Niagara Falls 8/22/08
review by Bucky for rock n roll universe
Sometime around 1981 I went to see Triumph in concert & opening the show was a band called Diesel(who had a small hit called "Summer Nights in Sausalito"). At the last minute a third act was thrown on the bill & that was Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. I was kind of aware of Joan from the Runaways & Creem Magazine but this was pre "I Love R & R". Jett opened the show & she blew me away with her look, style,& hard edge sound. The second song she played was my favorite Stones song at the time "Star Star" & now I was hooked. The only problem was the rest of the audience booed her off the stage & threw stuff at my friends & I as we cheered. I have seen her numerous times after that & have never been disappointed. She is the female definition of "Rock & Roll"!
I was a bit hesitant to go see Joan Jett this past Friday knowing it was a free concert at the Niagara Falls Casino & because of my back condition I can't really last long in crowds. At about 7:15 Friday Night My wife & I decided to go.The setup was great as there were a ton of chairs setup all over so we sat about 40 rows from the stage. We missed the opening band & within about 15 minutes after we got there Joan Jett & the Blackhearts hit the stage as "Blitzkkrieg Bop" by the Ramones blared through the PA. She opened with a a hard edge rocker in the same vein as Social Distortion called "Change the World" & from there she launched into the Runaways anthem "Cherry Bomb".Without a breath the band launched into the title track from the 1987 movie "Light of Day".This version of the Blackhearts have been around for a few years now led by Jett, drummer Thommy Price(formerly of Scandal & Billy Idol),old school Punk guitarist Dougie Needles, bassist Enzo(whose birthday was that day & Joan led the crowd of thousands into a round of Happy Birthday),& rounding out the band was longtime Joan Jett mentor/producer Kenny Laguna on Keyboards. The show was great as the band performed 17 songs including all of her hits such as "Do You Want to Touch Me", "Bad Reputation","I Love Rock & Roll", "Crimson & Clover",& "I Hate Myself For Loving You" which had the crowd standing & singing throughout the performance. Her encore was her single from her last album 'Sinner' which is a rockin' remake of Sweet's "AC/DC".She Closed her 80 minute set with a cover of Sly & the FAmily Stone's "Everyday People" which had a phenominal almost Foghat like guitar exchange between Jett & Needles.
Once again I was not disappointed with Joan Jett's performance as besides kicking ass musically she looked great & moved around onstage just as she did almost 30 years ago.
