Island of misfit survivors.
A group of pissed off tree huggers are protesting the cutting down of forests at a logging mill on a remote island. Little do they know there is genetic testing going on. Scientists there are using a genetically enhancing hormone called GX1134. The hormone is injected into the fungus of the trees to produce bigger and more growth. The tree huggers sabotage a tree by “spiking” it, breaking the blade on a logger’s chainsaw, cutting him. The genetically enhanced tree sap mixes with the logger’s blood, starting a chain reaction of zombie mayhem. With an island over run by zombies, only a small group of survivors must fight their way out to freedom. Being ripped to shreds one by one, the group gets smaller. Will anyone survive the zombies’ lust for flesh?
Here’s another one I was pretty excited about seeing. I was not let down. Although slow in some parts, it’s pretty much straight action from beginning to end.
The best thing to compare this to is 28 Days. A lot of resemblances here. To “turn”, you either get bitten, or a direct contact to your bloodstream. Even the way the movie was done and set up, it could almost be a continuation of 28 Days, which isn’t a bad thing. If you liked it, you will definitely like this one. Good acting, plenty of bloodshed, and some awesome camera work make this a very entertaining film for any zombiphile.
The main thing going for this, other than the zombies and effects, is the camera work. The way the camera is used, it just intensifies the kill scenes. It also helps to build up and hold the tension. The tension level is sky high in this.
The zombies looked really good. Pretty close to Romero zombies from Day of the Dead, and as I mentioned before, 28 Days. The blood begins to flow close to the beginning and doesn’t let up. The gore scenes are very realistic looking. A lot of good gut-munching scenes. You also get the two main zombie types. You get the “hyper zombies” and you get the “shamblers”. It’s nice to see both zombie types incorporated here, instead of only sticking to one type.
As good and as fun as this movie was, there are also downfalls as well. The acting was very good, but there was no character development, so you really didn’t care much who lived and who died. Also, there were a lot of plot holes throughout. The most irritating was, until the end, it was never clear what the scientists were doing or what was happening. But the worst part was the ending. You are sitting there waiting for something to happen, then all of a sudden, the credits role. You jump up and are like WTF!!! You crave more.
With the downfalls though, it still didn’t stop me from enjoying this movie. It’s worth checking out. I would rate this 6.75 out of 10 pissed off lumberjacking zombies.
