Otcconan raises a good point in that for the most part, some things are better left alone.
Good point Conan...to me James Bond = Sean Connery!...case closed!
Appreciate the works for what they were when first released and leave it that way...at least that's the way I feel about it for the most part.
There have been many remakes of movies in all genres and I can't really think of any one that stands out in my mind as far as being superior to any degree from the original.
Okay, alot of folks considered the remake of Texas Chainsaw to be pretty good.
It was okay, but what I found was they really had to stretch in terms of gore in order to come off big with this one.
They succeeded in doing so and also added a little bit more in terms of the story line which in my opinion was the only saving grace...kind of took it one step further in the story line...which is a good thing of course, but for me, the original just left me spooked!...sometimes "less is more".
Anyone can make a movie illustrating "gore" and they proved it here with this remake of the classic release.
The original was ground breaking at the time because they got away with doing the same to an extent and yet left the audience feeling rather "creeped" out about the movie overall because of so many unanswered questions at the time...especially when it was touted as being partially based on a true story...kind of added to the mystique and overall effect the movie had on movie goers at the time.
I remember seeing this movie for the first time in our local theater and witnessing female members of the audience scream their bloody heads off and throw their popcorn 6 aisles behind them! It was well worth the 50 cents admission we paid back then...(can you tell I'm old?)...haha.
It was a treat back then and we didn't have VCR's to allow us the chance to see the movie again 3 months later by renting it from the local Blockbuster video outlet...(we also had to walk to school 12 miles...uphill...both ways...and got beat by our parents because we didn't close the door properly...at least I did.).
These days, even if it's based on a true story, most viewers have been conditioned over the years to accept the "slash and gore" aspect of movies. Hard to beat the sensationalist approach most producers these days have in releasing movies like SAW or similar type releases...*Yawn*.
Seriously, I would think anyone on a field trip to an abattoir could get the same results for half the price of admission and come out of it as a card carrying vegetarian afterwards. If that's what movies are all about these days, then kudos to the folks making them for they have done their job!
I can honestly say that I wouldn't be surprised to see a remake of "Jaws", "The Shining", and maybe even "The Godfather". I can also say that I'm glad that I most likely won't be around in 30 years to see the remake of Star Wars...call me crazy, but I'd rather give in to death than see someone try and recreate this masterpiece all in the name of special effects...just in order to "one-up" George Lucas.
For what it's worth, I'll admit I'm from the old school and for the first time in 1976, "Gone With The Wind" was finally released in a 2 part movie extravaganza!...in all of it's black and white glory...complete with a shitload of commercials and I thought it was just great!
We have also been witness to not only one, but 2 remakes of the classic "King Kong"...the first remake didn't work and the recent take on this classic sure as hell didn't set the world on fire either from what I understand either? Fay Wray rules!!!!!!!!!!!
Once again call me crazy, but the day they decide to do a remake casting Brad Pitt as Rhett Butler and Angelina whatserface as Scarlet,...pleeeeeassse...pop a cap in my ass cuz I'll wanna be done!...Hey?...there's a movie in itself!!!
Worst part is...you know damn well something like this is coming down the pipes...because over the last many years, Hollywood seems to be grasping at straws to do whatever they can to bring out the next big "blockbuster", and frankly I don't think they have a clue as to what to do next except sell out and go for the gold by sucking in the audience and getting whatever they can, as quick as they can.
Thanks
Kim
