I was watching a Bio of Steve McQueen last night and found it quite interesting to note the roles that he had turned down as an actor during his day.
For some reason, Steve was pooped out and wanted nothing to do with making movies for a period during a good portion of the 70's. Here was an artist content on living the life of a virtual recluse and just wanted to live his life in obscurity for quite some time at this stage of his life.
According to the sources, he was offered script after script and he kept turning Hollywood down at every call.
Some of the notable offerings to Steve...
One Flew Over The Cuckoos' Nest
Apocalypse Now
Rambo - First Blood
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
It amazes me to no end in wondering, just what might have been in movie making history had some of these choices been made otherwise?
Honestly, I can't see anyone else as Jack in his role in Cuckoos Nest...or Stallone in Rambo as far as that goes.
I could see McQueen pulling it off in Apocalypse Now as well as the lead in Close Encounters over Dreyfus though in those films.
Anyway, along with some of the better known roles turned down such as Burt Reynolds as Han Solo, (betcha ole Burt's kickn' his arse for that one), or another one that comes to mind is Robert Blake...this guy thought he was so good, he passed on the lead for "Midnight Cowboy", poor ole Bobby didn't take "dat one to da bank" but Jon Voight sure did!!!...
...are there any others out there that folks are aware of and just what are your thoughts on turning away opportunities that just may have made or broken careers of the artists that turned down these roles?
Thanks
Kim
