I realize that I'm short on time in posting this thread, but thought it might come in handy to folks looking for recipes to treat the guests that may be celebrating the festivities with you and yours.
If anyone would like to pass along some ideas for good food and treat style recipes for ringing in the New Year...post them here.
I'm sure some of you are aware of this one, but I'll post it anyway for those not familiar with it. I plan to make this one tomorrow night.
It's been referred to as "Rumakki" I believe but not sure of the exact recipe. The following is my take on a tasty little snack of that persuassion however and one that my mom showed me many years ago.
(Have a couple of drinks)...Take some raw bacon strips...I usually cut them in half lengthwise so it makes for more...(have a couple more drinks)...
Carefully wrap the bacon around individual, drained, canned, whole, water chestnuts. Hold together with toothpicks...(have a drink)...(makes it easier for grabbin' them). Soak in Soya Sauce, (the Lite version as the bacon is salty to begin with). (Have a drink and consider what else you can add).
Add a little garlic powder and ground black pepper to the brine as well if desired. Let sit for a few hours in the fridge...(have many, many drinks during this crucial process...it will give you the feeling that you are truly the worlds greatest chef).
If you prefer a hot & spicy version, throw in a few squirts of "Franks Hotter Sauce" or Tabasco.
(Have a drink or two)...
Remove from fridge...(get yerself a drink while yer at it).
Stagger over to the counter and place bacon wrapped contents on foil covered baking sheet and slam into oven at about 350 - 375f. Let the cat eat the ones that get dropped on the floor...(wife'll clean that up in the morning)...
(If yer starving, turn oven up to 1000f and get ready to pull out fast...hahaha)...(avoid falling into the oven and and avoid banging yer head on the counter behind you as the blast of heat assaults your face)...*have a drink or two*...
Seriously, these things take about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how you like the bacon. They won't burn because of the bacon grease and water content of the chestnuts...(keep an eye on them...if flames appear, you've cooked them too long)...haha...regardless...while you're waiting...(have a drink or two)!!! If fire does break out, call the wife at work and get the number for 911...invite the paramedics in for some "tweets" when they get there (and invite them to have a drink with you).
Open the oven door and laugh in the face of death as you singe your arm hairs and the first 2 layers of skin retrieving these little beauties from the oven without wearing oven mitts...(cuz you've had a drink or two).
Remove red hot baking sheet from oven...stagger twice to the left...4 times to the right...back to center...bang the cat on the head with pan and throw into sink exclaiming "Hooooooly muther of gawd!!!!!!!!"
Let cool, nurse 3rd degree burns, suck bacon grease from burnt shirt...(have a drink if there's any left)... and eat as many as you can before you pass out...these things are a tad salty but addictive and should be enjoyed with a dry white wine or any kind of beer if yer still awake to do so.
Afterwards, when you come to... the salty taste may be somewhat prevalent on the pallete...my advice for that..............(have a drink or two)!
Honestly, it's a great recipe and if you'd like, substitute "pop" for drinks while making them.
Enjoy...I know I will...
Thanks
Kim
