This was a letter posted in Support at Proboards. Everyone keep a watchful eye and let Rick and I know if you notice anything strange. There is a hacker, and is attacking Proboards main system and many forums.
Board URL: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Problem: This isn't so much a problem on my forum, but it does concern my forum...
I'm not quite sure how to explain this, but I'll try.
I am the 2nd admin on my best friend's forum xxxxxxxx.
Recently, on 11th February, this year, a new member joined the forum, and called themselves 'DeathAngel'.
We didn't seem to have much of a problem with this user, until we noticed that someone's account was being hacked into. It was either the main admin's account or my own. We approached this guy (I'm assuming he's male as that's what he's said) as he had sent us some wierd messages. He told us some c*ck and bull story, which I do not believe, about why he has to be a hacker.
We banned him, but he seemed to have 'un-banned' himself. I also changed my password for the forum, just in case it was my account he was hacking into. How he worked out my password, I do not know, as it was quite long and a mixture of numbers and letters, but he told me that it was my account that he had been hacking into.
He disappeared for a month and a bit, but about a week ago, he re-appeared.
He sent me a message, warning me about banning him or whatever. My friend, the main admin of the board, banned him anyway.
Now, we both, that is my friend and I, and another member of his forum all noticed that there was something wrong with proboards, as we all have a forum each, on different servers, and something had happened to all three of them.
Today, when I logged onto my forum, I had received a message. The odd thing was, it was from myself. It was titled 'WARNING!!!' and contained the following message:
Hi, I wonder who this could be talking to you right now?
I'll use this IM as a warning...
Try banning me again and it will result in all of you losing your forums AND proboards crashing again.
So i'll leave you to your buisness right now...
I must admit, I did feel just a bit scared. Whoever had sent me this, was right. Proboards had crashed in a way, I had noticed it myself, last night.
I logged onto my friend's forum and sent him the same message, telling him that I had been sent it from myself on my forum.
I went to look at the admin settings, and, yet again, 'DeathAngel' was not banned, even though my friend had banned him only a week or so ago.
My friend did not seem intimidated by all this in any way and told me that he had to go, but would ban DeathAngel again.
I told him not to, because of what he said (Try banning me again and it will result in all of you losing your forums AND proboards crashing again).
By 'all of your forums', I think he meant my friend's forum and my own, but I'm not sure.
So, when I logged-on here, I noticed Pat's topic: 'Can't access your board? Read here!'
I read the message (If you are having problems accessing your board, this is our current situation:
Today at approximately 11:29 PST a DOS attack against our name servers started. This is preventing some people from accessing their boards. Our Web host is taking care of the problem and hopefully everything will be restored shortly.
I apologize for any inconvience this causes our members, however please understand that this is completely out of our control and is due to the malicious intentions of some currently unknown person.
Patrick) and noticed the last part in particular: 'is due to the malicious intentions of some currently unknown person'.
I have no idea whether this 'DeathAngel' is the one responsible for all the problems that happened yesterday, but it certainly does raise my suspicions.
I'm truly sorry to bother you all and also that this is such a long post!
I'm not really sure whether I need help, but I would like to make sure that our forums are safe.
We have tried IP banning him, but he keeps managing to come back and we even deleted him.
Again, I'm sorry to bother you, and if anyone can help, I'll be very grateful.
