Personally, I don't think there has ever been a "solo" career that even comes close to matching Ozzy's. And everyone thought he was finished when he left Sabbath.

Axl Rose of course. Who else has had such a successful career by doing NOTHING for the past decade plus? The money he's been given to work on 'Chinese Democracy' is more than the GNP of some small countries. Isn't it almost time for him to see his shadow and go back in his hole soon?

Of course there's always Paul McCartney, who hasn't done too shabby since The Beatles, who's one of the wealthiest people in the music business. At least for now, until he has to give the gimp a good portion that is...you'd think that with all his money he could've afforded a wife with all limbs intact

Sammy Hagar left Montrose and started putting out solid rock albums as a solo artists, joined Van Halen quit/got fired or whatever and picked right up where he left off. I also like Roger Waters solo stuff since he left Pink Floyd back in 85'. And Rod Stewart left the Faces and became a mega star..

I can Agree w/ Ozzy especially for his first 3 releases alone. I guess I can probably say Clapton's solo stuff did pretty well also as did Mccartney as Nightwatcher said. My favorite solo careers(I know they're not the best) are Johnny Thunders after the NY Dolls Ace Frehley in the 80's & early 90's after Kiss(especially w/ Richie Scarlet as his 2nd guitar) & I really enjoyed everything Joe Perry Project put out in the 80's

If by BEST you mean most successful.....it has to be either Paul McCartney or Ozzy. Both had hit after hit. You could say Paul has the nod just because of the years he maintained his popularity. Sir Paul could practically sell out MSG every day of the year.
If BEST means who do I like best........I liked ACE Frehley's solo output, except for Second Sighting which was weak. Halford did some good stuff, the first FIGHT album was great and Resurrection was fantastic.

Neil Young after leaving The Buffalo Springfield. He wasn't even their main creative force, yet he eclipsed everyone in that band after leaving. Even the mighty Stephen Stills.

Although he never left the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia has an outstanding solo career outside the band, both artistically and by popularity.

Eric Clapton has been very successful since leaving 3 supergroups True. You could almost make an argument for him being THE most succesful. He sure does have the touch....whatever it is. Yardbirds - Hit John Mayall - Hit Cream - Hit Blind Faith - Hit Derek and the Dominoes - Hit Clapton solo - Hit Though he has never had the 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 copies sold album he has continued to be a million seller album after album after album.

It is also intersting that he doesn't get much play on this site. Not alot of Clapton fans on here. I find that I like just about half of what he's done.

I like Clapton a lot....and I prefer his playing to any of the BIG boys of the day(Page, Beck, Hendrix).
However I find that we tend to stick with our faves on here....which to me is mid 70's to 80's hard rock/metal.
I'll talk Clapton anytime because I consider him a major influence to players I love AND myself.

I've always been a fan of Clapton. ...hmm about those rumors of Clapton playing uncredited lead guitar on the Stones "Sympathy For the Devil" & the Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...are they true?(anyone know?)

Don't know about the Stones song, but he definitely sat in and played lead on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Don't know any Stones trivia, but I'm up on the Beatles.

Rod Stewart of course....The Women, the guy lives in paradice, he calls his own shots, does what he wants when he wants. Has sold albums every decade. Hasn't had any real tragic happenings.
