ZZ Top but I think they might be a blues rock band from the south not necessarily a southern rock band. .38 Special or Lynyrd Skynyrd if ZZ Top don't count. If Black Stone Cherry puts a out a couple of albums they could easily take the top spot for me. They're off to a hell of a start.

Lot of great southern rock & a lot of mixed styles. Any of these bands are faves of mine:
ZZ Top Blackfoot Raging Slab Cry of Love Molly Hatchet Point Blank Screaming Cheetah Wheelies
Of course there is Skynyrd & the Allman Brothers. For something a little different, Little Feat & Les Dudek.

I would say Skynyrd...
If the Allmans are considered a Southern band, then they get the nod over Skynyrd...

It's a toss up between Skynyrd, .38 Special and ZZ Top.

I like a lot of Southern Rock, but old Skynyrd has no equal...for me anyway. And, I find myself i ntrigued by Pete's question... WAS ZZ Top a "Southern Rock" band? Sometimes all the labels and categories confuse my weak mind. (Sh*t, it's all rock-and-roll.) I KNOW Skynyrd is considered "Southern", and .38 Special...but, does there have to be a Van Zant in the band to be Southern Rock? But, isn't Skynyrd considered Country these days? I'm just not sure anymore... Jesse, clear this up...please.

Pre-crash Skynyrd is quite possibly the best live band ever.

Ha Ha! Labels suck!! I agree with that.
I wouldn't consider ZZ Top "southern rock". They arrived on the scene before the term was really coined.
Allmans and Skynyrd are considered "southern rock". They too arrived on the scene before the term was really coined.
Not until you had the many bands signed after the success of Allmans and Skynyrd did we get the term southern rock.
I actually consider these bands more of a Heavy Metal Country. They really have much more in common with country than rock. Sorry if that offends some fans.....but I am just as big a fan no matter what the roots are.
Since you stated who's your FAVE....instead of who is the BEST.....I will pick Blackfoot.....barely edging out Molly Hatchet(old days of course). Blackfoot was one of the first shows I ever saw. Also they were especially nice to us kids, sitting and BSing with us for a couple hours. Sure...I know, they were on the road in Hicksville and bored.....but they could have been dicks and sat in their air conditioned Trailer. Ric, Jax, Charlie, and Greg all treated us with respect. Besides I really like their music.
If you said who is BEST Skynyrd wins by a mile. They are far and away the band who made the term southern Rock a necessity.

I agree some southern rock bands sounds like contry/rock now, but back then? In the 70's? No. Country was still country & southern rock was heavier, though influenced by country, blues, gospel, even a little R&B. My friends & I called Skynryd Southern rock in the 70's, the term has been around a long time. Blackfoot is still heavier than todays country rock. Southern rock today has become many things, from the Allmans & Skynyrd all the way to heavies like Raging Slab & the even heavier Clutch, can be categorized as southern rock for the 21st century.

I am old too....Ha! I don't really remember the term southern rock until after all the Skynyrd clones started. Before that the term was unecessary. Skynyrd sounded country in the 70's to me.
