I thought it might be fun to get people's remarks & opinions on some bands that we don't post about often. Some of these bands will be much more obscure than other ones posted on here, but in general are definitely on the rare side of things due to either being forgotten or never really had a huge audience in the first place. I'll go through each band alphabetically.
The band: James Gang
The James Gang is probably most famous for having in their circle guitarist Joe Walsh, & funny enough Joe's work with the Eagles & his solo career are probably much more widely known than his work with the James Gang. This is not to say the James Gang was obscure in their day, but over thirty years later? Well, I'd say they would qualify for listeners under 40.
My favorite James Gang album, & by far I believe the most eye opening, especially for people who are only familiar with Joe Walsh through his solo work & work with the Eagles, is James Gang "Live in Concert." This concert album is just mind blowing. Joe Walsh was never heavier, faster, & more impressive than he was on this album. Recorded in 1971 this album is one of the hardest & heaviest documents of the time. Joe & band just wailing on songs like "Walk Away," "You're Going to Need Me,""Stop" & the incendiary "Lost Woman," a heavy rock opus gigantic proportion. "Live in Concert" also had its mellow side, the beautiful "Tend My Garden" & "Ashes, Rain & I," are timeless & soothing as the rockers are rip roaring.
"Live in Concert" has to be one of the greatest overlooked live recordings in all of rock. A towering monument to Joe Walsh's commanding authority of guitar. And of a band that could not only back him up with equal command, but a rhythm section that not only enhanced, but actually layed down a new blue print for power trios of the future.
The James Gang was also a springing board for guitarists Tommy Bolin. Joe Walsh suggested Tommy as his replacement. Tommy came on for "Bang" with songs already written from another project "Energy" (I believe was the name?) & "Miami." Out of the two I'd say "Bang" was the better record, but either is indispensable for fans of Tommy's bright, but short career.
