During both of these band's heyday in the 70's who do you feel was better, Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple?

Yikes!!! I can't answer that...hahaha.
Subjective at best?
This one could be broken down into a multiple part type poll... Better vocalist...Plant or Gillan Better drummer...Bonham or Paice Better guitar...Page or Blackmore Better bassist JP Jones or Glover
Purple wins it hands down in the keyboard department I think.
Other than that, it's up for grabs. Quite a legacy both groups have going for them...and in Purples' case...still has going for them.
We'd need to consider longevity vs. lineup changes vs. original lineup vs. output vs. popularity vs. live performance.
Interesting match up though...both blues/rock fusion oriented groups.
This should be good. I have a feeling that the nod would go to Zep simply because of the profound impact their music had over a much shorter period and with songs that are known that much more because of it.
Honestly Nightwatcher...I couldn't pick one over the other. I hold them both in such high regard as contributors and artistic geniuses combined for the music that continues to be their legacy.
My pick though would have to be...Deep Purple...just because I have a preference for their overall sound and the bulk of their earlier catalog.
For me "Machine Head" alone tops Zep in having such a complete album that I love from start to finish.
Thanks Kim

Love Purple, but Led Zeppelin had/has a much, much, much, more profound effect on me.

Deep Purple, without a doubt. Led Zep don't come anywhere near my top ten of favourite bands, excellent as they were.
Purple were the better live band, and had the better musicians. Led Zep were an excellent band, but got incredibly pompous, boring and overblown after their first four albums.

Too damn hard to compare. I might give a slight edge to Zeppelin for the impact they had during their time and the fact that I have every one of their albums and have worn them all out. But then again, I could just as easy go with Deep Purple because they have stood the test of time a little better to my ears. I dunno, depending upon my mood and the alignment of the stars I could vote for either on any given day, so I voted for "Neither, They are both just as good".

Too hard to compare. I probably like Purple a little more and I am more into Blackmore as a guitar player....but Jimmy Page was a genious when it came to writing chord progressions. Blackmore was a genious with melody and was ahead of his time. Zeppelin was also the more stable band. Deep Purple had what four different line ups? Ritchie actually quit the band he started. I assume though that for comparioson purpose we are talking about the Purple Mark II lineup.

I am a fan of Deep Purple. But...Led Zeppelin is the greatest band there ever was, or ever will be. IMO, of course.

Deep Purple, for the simple reason that I listen to 'In Rock', 'Machine Head' and 'Burn' more than I listen to Zeppelin. Zeppelin were awesome though, i'll give them that, but Page never constructed a solo as awesome as the one Blackmore came up with in 'Child In Time', which is one of the all time greatest solos in all of rock history, and therefore one of the best songs of all time as well.

I went with Purple here...
I just plain like them better. In the period of both their heydays, I prefer to listen to In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head and Who Do We Think We Are (not to mention Burn and Stormbringer) over the entire Zep catalogue.
I prefer the acoustic Zep over the hard rocking Zep. I was never a huge fan of Jimmy Page, always found him to be a sloppy player. I prefer to listen to Blackmore.
