Never been a Springsteen fan....if I want to hear that type of music I would rather listen to Van Morrison. Never really liked Springsteens arrangements. Hated the overuse of the saxaphone. There are a couple songs here and there that I liked but that's it.
Early Billy Joel I dig....I grew up on the album '52nd St.' Great album. Didn't really like anything past 'Glass Houses ' though....

Both are great songwriters, but I can't stand either one of them. Springsteen is the better driver though !

Once the 80's kicked in neither of them made any music I care for.
Springsteen was good in the 70's, but Billy Joel was great in the 70's. Piano Man through Glass Houses were all great IMO.

I like 70s Joel, but I worship 70s Bruce. And although it wasn't his best stuff, 80s Bruce wipes the floor with 80s Joel.

I'm not a fan of either, but I voted for Joel, because he didn't start the fire.

Never cared much for Springsteen. Some of his music is alright, certainly nothing totally offensive to my ears, but nothing I tend to crank up either.
For years I told myself and anyone who would listen that I didn't like Billy Joel save for a handful of songs. When I started to name those songs and think about it, there were actually quite a few. So I started buy his records (cassettes actually) and you know what? There's a helluva lot more Billy Joel songs that I like than those I hate. Those who say he hasn't done anything good since the 70's should check out "Storm Front" and "River Of Dreams" albums. While I could care less about the top hits ("We Didn't Start The Fire" and "River OF Dreams" respectively") the rest is solidly good and IMO the best he's ever done. Both were produced my Foreigner's Mick Jones and feature guest appearances by Jones, Joe Lynn Turner and Leslie West. Definitely shits all over "Honestly", "My Life", "Allentown", "Just The Way You Are", "It's Still Rock'n Roll To Me", "Innocent Man" and some of his other worthless pop hits.

If I, as a soul survivor of a remote and distant plane crash, had two corpses to eat and they were Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen, respectively, I would consume Billy Joel first. He's got better marbling I'm guessing and would taste better probably...

I went with Springsteen.
In the early days, I would have opted for Joel, but his output in later years seemed a little too commercial for me. I loved "The Stranger" and some of the cuts from "52nd Street" though.
In listening to Springsteens "The Rising", it appears to me that the guy still writes and performs some pretty good stuff and apparently backs it up with stellar live performances every time he decides to tour.
Last I heard, Joel's talents have subsided over the years and at one point heard that he was about to quit touring all together? Whether this was true or not, I don't know? I recall seeing a clip of him in concert and the pipes just didn't seem to have the same impact as they once did.
Thanks Kim

Springsteen by miles. I am also a really big fan of Joel, particularly the 70's stuff, but as many of my posts here have attested to, I am a Springsteen FANATIC. I am nearly 36 years old and he has been my favorite artist since The River came out in 1980. I find myself loving his music even more as I get older. What other artists can say they are still putting out relevant music that sells and fills concert halls 33 years after their debut album?
