Wow, this was a tough one, but I went with Ronnie James Dio, only because my favorite album in Heaven & Hell when he was in Black Sabbath. I do like Ozzy though, or should I say, I used to before he was sooo burnt.

That is too tough to call because the Ozzy era Sabbath is hard to beat. I am also a huge fan of Dio era Rainbow. I am going to have to go with both. Although I have more respect for Ronnie as a person and songwriter. I think Ozzy lacks in both departments.

I preferred Ozzy in Sabbath but overall I went with Dio.I loved Heavan & Hell & The Mob Rules albums with Sabbath & also love his Dio stuff as well as Rainbow(I know I have an Elf record somewhere but I don't really remember it).It is really close though especially when I think of Ozzy's first 3 solo albums

HEAVEN AND HELL HAS SOME GREAT TUNES THAT CAN ONLY BE DELIVERED THE WAY RONNIE CAN. I NEVER HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST BLACK SABBATH FAN. BUT THIS IS OZZY VS DIO IN THE BLACK SABBATH WAY OF THINKING. OZZY'S SOLO STUFF HAS ALWAYS PRODUCED SOME KILLER GUITAR PLAYERS.. IF IT WAS ONE OR THE OTHER SOLO I MIGHT SWAY OZZY'S WAY BUT. SO MY VOTE IS DIO. I LOVED THE THINGS HE CONTRIBUTED TO RAINBOW............. MY VOTE RONNIE JAMES DIO

Ozzy for his Sabbath stuff alone. Very innovative music if you are old enough to remember. DIO has always been a B - List performer. He was in the B-list PURPLE(Rainbow), He only had ONE great album with Sabbath, and other than his first couple DIO albums has been very uneven. He is hard to work with....he couldn't hang in any band AND now he can't keep players.
I personally really like his music, but it is obvious that to the masses OZZY far outshines DIO.

I went with Ozzy also, for being able to bring it successfully so long. I do take a bit of exception to Rainbow being classified as a "B-List" Purple. I'll take the 2nd and third Rainbow albums (Rising, Long Live Rock'n'Roll) over pretty much anything Purple ever did. IMHO Dio also did one great one with Sabbath (Heaven and Hell) and one really good solo (Holy Diver), but for longevity, diversity, and overall career Ozzy wins in a walk.

If we are comparing them as singers, then it is Dio without a doubt. Better voice and better range.
But there's something about the intensity of those early Sabbath albums that is irresistable, and Ozzy is one of the main reasons behind that.
Still, I went with Dio, because Ozzy never sang on an album as good as Rainbow Rising.

First of all, it's good to be back... it's been almost a year since the last time I logged in on the board...
Of course, this is a hard thread... but I go with Dio... He's the master of what I've always called "Continental Rock", even though he's English, CR is that kind of heavy metal that deals with witches, the middle-ages, especially related to Europe's history... a little bit far from girls, sex, party... but always too close to drinking beer... hahahahaha
Good to be back, see ya!
