Can you think of any songs that are so uniquely performed by their original artist that there's really no way anyone with any sense would try to cover them?

I think with the right mindset anything could be covered and done quite well.

Never heard a decent cover of "Born To Be Wild" and there's quite a few. Kay's voice is just too distinctive so anything else just doesn't sound right in my opinion. Slade once opened for Steppenwolf and did BTBW as an encore, what a bunch of jerks. (their version sucks too) lol

Black Rose-Thin Lizzy Phantom Of the Opera-Iron Maiden Big Balls-AC/DC Chiid In Time-Deep Purple Four Sticks-Zeppelin Am I Going Insane(Radio)-Black Sabbath Mind you, Ian Gillan did an excellent cover of Child in Time on the first Ian Gillan Band album. They changed it around slightly, and gave it a more spacey feel courtesy of some great guitar work by Ray Fenwick. Worth a listen. I didn't think it could be done, but this is a prety decent attempt.
