Have you noticed that here are bands starting to emerge that are bringing the sound of classic rock back? There are ones that I’ve heard, like The Black Keys, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Jet; and ones I haven’t, like Wolfmother and The Sword (but I’ve read and heard good things about them). But it seems like we are staring to head in the right direction. Even bands like Coheed and Cambria are bring back a progressive-metal-kinda thing back. And it’s not that these bands are just existing…they are actually getting a buzz and/or selling well. Only time will tell…but I like where we are going. Rock music seems to be in a lot better shape than, say, four years ago. Any thoughts?

The number of good bands haven't gone up. 70s influenced rock is just trendy now.

The good bands are always around, yes. I guess I mean that the "taste" or musical "trend" is better now...and as a result it brings better bands to the forefront.

The number of good bands haven't gone up. 70s influenced rock is just trendy now. Maybe so, it appears to be gaining popularity. Of course good rock could've been selling millions all along if the labels pushed it and radio and music TV channels played the crap out of it like they used to. A lot of people are like sheep, they'll buy whatever's perceived as "cool". If they played heavy rock constantly on MTV2, etc. it'd sell just like it used to. There are plenty of young bands with great, catchy songs that would go over well if given exposure. Of course if it becomes popular again then it'll get diluted just like it has time and time again. Bands would be only looking to come up with the next hit single, and the music would begin to suck. Same ol' story same ol' song and dance

I remember when MTV first came out....I thought it was such a great idea at the time Now I know that it killed a lot of great music and promotes a lot of shitty music.

Rock music seems to be in a lot better shape than, say, four years ago. Any thoughts? Are Black Rebel still around? A lot was made of them a couple of years ago, but then they just seemed to disappear. I saw Coheed and Cambria live a couple of months ago. They sounded excellent, but they had no stage presence. The one aspect I see most missing in today's music scene are great frontmen, who can command an audience, and stand tall amongst them, proud to be there playing his songs. People like David Coverdale or Bon Scott. They were magic in front of a crowd. Still, I agree to an extent. The music scene is definitely at its most healthiest in ten years, certainly at least here in Britain. The number of boy bands miming their latest hit is not as great as it was several years back.

I believe that ALOT of the newer hard rock bands are making good music but they are lacking a singer who stands out and grabs your attention. Perfect example for me is Coheed and Cambria, they have great prog influenced music but then that whiny singing, just ruins it for me. I also like some of these new Metal bands music like A7Fold, Children Of Bodom and Trivium but the vocals for the most part kill it for me. I hope that these newer rock bands find some proper singers and that's the new trend. Just my hope. P.S Jorn Lande is headlining this years PROG POWER 2006 in the USA, hopefully he will gain alot of new exposure by playing this show. Silvertide sound like a less-clever version of the Black Crowes. I'll pass.
Coheed and Cambria Prog? The Mars Volta would be terribly offended by that. THAT is Prog.

When it comes to younger frontmen, Josh Todd of Buckcherry is pretty good. He carries a nice presence on stage with him.

The only thing I hear at times in Silvertide's sound in comparison with The Crowes would be Walt Lafty's vocals, and that's just in a song or two. More of an Aerosmith/GNR type influence in my opinion. It's all good though. Funny though that's what many people said about Rush back in the day about their first album, that they were a less clever version of Led Zeppelin. Same thing with The Crowes, that they were a rip off of The Faces, Stones and Humble Pie.

I think theres always been good bands around, but you just have to dig deep to find them. The state of mainstream rock today is atrocious, but I can see signs of improvement. Whether things really start to blossum is anyones guess, but I do believe the time is right. Now will have to see if the kids feel the same way?

Silvertide sound like a less-clever version of the Black Crowes. I'll pass. Walt may sound a little like Robinson and maybe the Crowes are more clever but Silvertide are a hell of a lot better live than the Black Crowes and more exciting. Walt Lafty and Nick Perri also have a much better stage presence. If you gave each the Crowes a bottle of Jack, a pound of speed, make Robinson wear shoes and kicked the guitar player in the ass then they might be comparable to Silvertide.

If you like the early YES or RUSH albums with the songs with the epics divided by roman numerals, you'll dig 'em...except there's some punk rock in there too and people jabbering in Spanish.
