I recently acquired someone's 675 CD collection! Among the Cds were quite a few U2 albums. I never really liked them, but, with their CDs in my possession, I decided to give them a fair listen and see if I can understand their appeal. Nope, not really. I mean, I can listen to them and even enjoy a few of their songs, but, man, I just don't get 'em. A few good songs, several of which are truly interchangeable. Main talent in the group is Bono. The guy comes across as an ass on a personal level, but he DOES have pipes. Very good voice, so, maybe, I get that aspect of the band. Bassist is solid. Drums are decent too, but neither are great by any definition. Guitar playing is seriously lacking though. Most of their songs wouldn't change significantly if the guitar was just taken out completely. And, to the extent that The Edge DOES add something to the songs through his guitar playing, it's pretty much that same jangly, echoey thing over and over again. Just variations of that same, simple concept. Several of their hits sound like, basically, the same song to me. I dunno, if U2 is your thing, God bless ya, but I don't get why anybody would need more than about a half-dozen U2 songs (not albums) in their collection.
