For a full week back in October, I kept track of what my local Classic Rock station (which will remain nameless, but it's owned by a conglomerate so I'm sure it could just as easily be ANY big market Classic Rock station). This wasn't as difficult as one might think. I actually never even listened to it! On their website, they post their recently played songs of the previous 12-24 hours and I simply copied and pasted them to a document when I got the chance. The difficult and time consuming part was/is in analyzing the data. Compiling what songs were played by which artists and tallying up the scores. My intent was to prove how boring and repetitious Classic Rock radio is. My findings were not all that clear however. I'm still working up my findings and my thoughts on it, but I figured I'd start posting what I've discovered so far.
So far, just reading the raw data, this particular Classic Rock station is more diverse than I've ever given them credit for. They have spots for, approximately, 1630 songs for the week and, this particular week, they played about 540 different songs, by 153 different artists! Pretty good diversity on the surface as that averages out to each song being played 3 times a week and each artist being represented at least once a day (keep in mind, this is around the clock, so if you are just listening at work or at home or on your daily commute, the chances of you hearing the same songs 3 times are low......IF this station were even-handed with their airtime!) However, there is more than meets the eye simply by the raw data. I'll post my full findings today, but I will continue to post my analysis as I go. There is a lot to be looked at here and I'm barely scratching the surface so far.

I don't expect anyone to compile this information in their head, so here are the most played artists:
1-Led Zeppelin- played 80 times. 28 different songs 2-The Rolling Stones- played 60 times. 26 different songs 3-Tom Petty- played 55 times. 15 different songs 4-Aerosmtih- played 48 times. 14 different songs 5-Pink Floyd- played 42 times. 10 different songs 6-Elton John- played 38 times. 12 different songs 7-Journey- played 36 times. 8 different songs 8-The Doors- played 33 times. 10 different songs 9-Fleetwood Mac- played 33 times. 10 different songs 10-Queen- played 33 times. 8 different songs.
For the record, out of the 1631 songs played during the week, 458 were by one of these 10 artists. In other words, when listening to this station, despite the diversity shown by how many different artists and songs they play, they play songs by one of these artists roughly 30% of the time! Also, of the 540 different songs they play, 140 (about 1/4) are by one of these 10 artists. Not very diverse, is it?

No real surprises there. I skimmed through the list. I think one of the most telling things for me on that list is the Van Halen plays. Every song but one was from the Roth era. Shows that the Roth era stood the test of time much better. I am not a fan of the Hagar era and don't really consider it Van Halen......but I always loved how people who loved the Hagar era would say...."...they sold more albums and had more hits with Sammy..".....which actually is not true. The Roth era has outsold the Hagar era significantly. Both eras were successful of coarse.....but the Hagar era just had more mainstream songs that really did not hold up well.

To me, the surprises were how many different songs and artists this station actually DID play. I expected around 100 songs by 35-40 artists. Don't know why, but I did. Probably because it seems like I hear the same songs every time I tune in to it. However, upon further review (as I've posted a little bit of), there IS quite a bit of repetition going on here. The diversity in the playlist is more from songs/artists being played once or twice a week during non-peak hours. In that respect, my finding weren't all that surprising. Another thing that surprised me was the amount of airplay given to both 80's Hair Bands and '90's grunge/alternative bands. Not saying that they shouldn't play those artists, but I'm surprised that they got the amount of airplay they did...… often while ignoring hits from established Classic Rock bands during the '80's and '90's. In tandem with my last paragraph, it surprised me that artists who dominated radio back in the day and/or were even a big part of Classic Rock radio just 5-10 years ago have been whittled down to (or nearly down to) "one-hit-wonder" status. Styx, Kansas, 38 Special, Boston, Allman Brothers Band, Billy Squier, The Black Crowes, Black Sabbath, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Cream, Deep Purple, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Heart, The Kinks, Jethro Tull, The Doobie Brothers, Rush, The Moody Blues, REO Speedwagon, Loverboy, Santana, The Guess Who, Warren Zevon, and Yes all reduced to a handful of songs played a handful of times. Weird. It wouldn't take a whole lot of search and effort to double the amount of songs they play and therefor increase the variety. Van Hagar albums, on the hole, charted better than Roth-era Van Halen albums and probably sold more initially too. But, yeah, the Roth-era left a bigger mark on the musical world and those songs just sound better in the context of 2019 than the Van Hagar tunes...… though this station could stand to add a few of the Hagar-era hits to their playlist.

So, here's 25 artists (random order) who USED to get a lot of airplay back in the day and many of them were staples on Classic Rock radio just a few short years ago, yet are only played sparingly today:
38 Special Allman Brothers Band America Bad Company The Black Crowes Billy Squier Black Sabbath Boston Bachman Turner Overdrive Creedence Clearwater Revival Cream Deep Purple The Doobie Brothers Jethro Tull Heart The Kinks Kiss Loverboy The Moody Blues REO Speedwagon Rush Santana Steely Dan Styx Yes
These 25 artists were played a COMBINED 144 times during this particular week and represented by a mere 55 songs among them. I came up with over 100 additional hits by these artists that this station could play. I guess they had to push these artists aside to make room for Nirvana, Soundgarden, Peral Jam, Blind Melon and Red Hot Chili Peppers :/
If you can't follow, I'll sum it up: The 10 artists I posted before, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Journey, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac and Queen are played about 30% of the time, while the 25 artists here are played about 9% of the time.
More analysis to come!

Looking at this from another angle, here are some of the most played songs:
And We Danced- The Hooters. Surprisingly played 9 times! Most of any song this particular week!
Played 8 times: Boys Of Summer-Don Henley Going To California-Led Zeppelin Jack And Diane-John Cougar Mellencamp Free Fallin'-Tom Petty Blackhole Sun-Soundgarden. Hard to believe that the same people who want to hear the above songs played 8 times also want to hear this song!
Played 7 times: Sister Golden Hair-America. Yeah, surprised me too! Wanted Dead Or Alive-Bon Jovi The Chain-Fleetwood Mac Comfortably Numb-Pink Floyd Faithfully-Journey Lola-The Kinks Sweet Home Alabama-Lynyrd Skynyrd Low Rider-War Whole Lotta Love-Led Zeppelin
These 15 songs account for 98 of the 1630 song plays or 6% of radio airtime.
Another 35 songs were played 6 times each. I won't list them, but add these songs to the first 15 and you got 50 songs played, roughly 20% of the time.
It wouldn't even bother me all that much except many of these songs have been played at this rate FOR 30 YEARS! I actually love many of these songs, but I don't need to hear them 6-8 times a week. Hell, I don't even need to hear them once a week!
