A little bit different from my "Retired Songs" thread. The "retired songs" I was willing to give that these were great songs, they've just been played so much that it was time to retire them from commercial airplay to make room for some other great songs. This thread is songs that I don't need to ever hear again. Some are those same great songs that I've just heard enough for one lifetime, some are good (but not great) songs that have just been played to the point where I can't stand them anymore and others I never particularly liked in the first place, yet they keep popping up on Classic Rock radio, in cover bands' setlists and folks keep playing them on bar jukeboxes. All to the point where I am just plain DONE with them and never want to or need to hear these songs again. Here we go:
"Sweet Home Alabama"-Lynyrd Skynyrd. Shame, it really is a good song. When/if I can separate myself from the fact that I've heard it 2 million times, I actually CAN enjoy this tune, but it is way overplayed. To the point where I just can't take it anymore. So many other, better moments in the Skynyrd catalog that I feel listening to this song is taking time out of my life that I could be spending listening to their other, better, tunes.
"Free Bird-Lynyrd Skynyrd. At least the original version I'm done with. Yes, it IS a great song, but the live version from "One More From The Road" is better. Yet it is the original studio version that gets played to death on the radio. To the point where I just can't enjoy it anymore and have to change the station.
"Dy'er Maker"_ Led Zeppelin. Worst song they ever did IMO. Never liked it. No matter how much it gets played I still won't like it. The more I hear it, the more I hate it. NEVER want to hear it again!
"All Of My Love"- Led Zeppelin. I actually really liked this song when I first heard it, but Classic Rock stations play it way too much and usually after a WWF-styled station announcement that they are about to "GET THE LED OUT!" It's a good song, but not typical of Led Zeppelin and should only be played as an excuse to slow dance at weddings.
"Eruption"- Van Halen. Yeah, Eddie's a great guitar player, this was so cool when I heard it the first 100,000 times. I so don't need to hear this guitar fluff anymore nor their version of "You Really Got Me" behind it.
"I Love This Bar"-Toby Keith. Country song. I'm not even sure how much it its still played on Country radio, but the patrons at my local bar have totally ruined any appeal this song may have had for me the last few years. They play it on the jukebox constantly and, on karaoke nights, someone always chooses this song to sing.... badly! I'm just so done with this song. It was only mildly amusing to begin with.
""Boys 'Round Here"- Blake Shelton/ Trace Adkins. Same as above, except this was never the least bit amusing to begin with. Lyrics sound like they were written by someone who has no idea what the appeal of Country music is. It's just sort of a characterization of the whole genre and its fans. Was a hit and folks at my local bar play the shit out of it on the jukebox there, so, I dunno, maybe the songwriter(s) knew what they were doing. But I don't want to ever hear this piece of shit again!
More to come!
