Guys at work were playing some really cool Metal music last week on their radio. I asked who it was and they said it was Avenged Sevenfold! Pretty good stuff, reminded me a bit of latter-day Helloween. Any fans here who can point me further in their direction? What Cds to buy, what to avoid?

I have heard that band over the years and never really liked them. I think it was the singer that put me off....maybe I should dig deeper...

I seem to recall that you don't like latter-day Helloween neither so.... Honestly, what I heard wasn't 100% awesome, but since usually jobsite radios are playing either modern rock or sounds like it was "bring your daughter's iPod to work day", I was pleasantly surprised and digging it for the most part. However, there were a few turds in there, that's why I started this thread as I don't want to just buy a random Avenged Sevenfold CD, not like it and go the rest of my life not liking the band only to find out that I bought their worst album. (Kinda like what I did with Testament )

(Kinda like what I did with Testament ) This is true....I think post Kiske Helloween blows... "Blows" is a strong term, but to each their own. They were a different band that's for sure. I still think the early ones with Andi Deris were pretty damn good to great. Only one I didn't particularly like on the whole was "Better Than Raw", but even that one contained two of my favorites of the Deris-era in "Hey Lord" and "Handful Of Pain". I thought "The Dark Ride" was pretty damn awesome. Seems to me, when Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch were kicked out of the band is when Helloween went downhill. "Rabbit Don't Come Easy", and "7 Sinners" were enjoyable, but forgettable. "Gambling With The Devil" had a few good songs on it, but nothing great. "Keeper Of The Seven Keys: Legacy" was a colossal waste IMO. Two memorable songs ("Mrs. God" and "Light The Universe") spread out over two Cds worth of music. Songs were epically long for the sake of being epically long, nothing more. "Halloween" and "Keeper Of The Seven Keys" were long songs that didn't seem long. Even the 5 and 6 minute songs on "...Legacy" seemed tediously longer than necessary.
