I've always liked Judas Priest, but never got heavily into them. I've had "British Steel", "Screaming For Vengeance" and "Turbo" on cassette and "British Steel" and "Nostradamus" on CD, plus have several of their hits on my iPod, but I only recently began seeking out their early stuff on CD. I started out with "Stained Class" Holy shit, what a great album! I'm sure this isn't news to most of you, but I was too young when this came out and just never got around to owning it. Great riffs, great songwriting. I know Rolling Stone reviewers are dumbfucks, but I didn't realize just how long they've been dumbfucks. I have an old Rolling Stone Record guide that describes the early Judas Priest albums as "recycled Led Zeppelin". I don't hear that at all. If anything, a few songs nod in the direction of Deep Purple or Black Sabbath, but taken as a whole, I think they had a pretty original sound for the time. Outstanding album, Rolling Stone gave it a 1 star out of 5. I'd give it at least a 4! I'm probably not saying anything the rest of you didn't already know, but I thought I'd share anyhow. Better late than never.

I began getting into Judas Priest with their release of Hell Bent for Leather which the title track is still my favorite song by them. I seen Priest on the Screaming for Vengeance Tour w/ Iron Maiden opening and what a great all around show that was. It's close with those 2 bands but I actually like Priest a little more. I love Stained Class, British Steel, Hell Bent For Leather, Sad Wings of Destiny, Screaming... ,and Defenders of the Faith. I like the rest from the 70's and 80's but not quite as much as the others I listed. I would recommend the remastered Live album Unleashed in the East which is great.
Back in the late 70's I was into Kiss, Aerosmith, Nugent, etc...then a friend got me into Sabbath with Master of Reality and next thing I know I'm also loving B.O.C., Deep Purple, UFO, and AC/DC so I'm finding a heavier side and another friend recommended Judas Priest and the Scorpions. I really loved Priest but I never really caught on with the Scorpions....I liked a few of their albums and there were/are a bunch of songs I love by them but overall they just don't stick with me.
I'm curious...what did everyone think of Nostradamus? I probably would have enjoyed it more if they could've made it into a single album. I do love the title track but it's hard for me to follow the story

"Hell Bent For Leather" is also my favorite Priest song. I was gonna do a top 10 Judas Priest, but I soon realized that, with my limited knowledge of them, most of my top ten would be from "British Steel". Which is why I started seeking out some of their other albums.
As for "Nostradamus". I liked the idea of it, so I bought it. I agree with you, Bucky, it shoulda been a single album. Most songs are pretty good on it, but nothing that really sticks. Other than the title song, I'm at a loss for how any of the other songs go.
Come to think of it, I think I have a live video of them somewhere too!

Defenders of the Faith is probably my favorite album by them, and the first one I bought in 1984.
If I had to do a top ten it'd look something like:
1. The Hellion/Electric Eye 2. Rock Hard Ride Free 3. Love Bites 4. The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown) 5. Breaking the Law 6. Hell Patrol 7. Out in the Cold 8. Halls of Valhalla 9. A Touch of Evil 10. (Take These) Chains
The only stand out track on Nostradamus, IMO, was Visions.

I started with Hell Bent For Leather & then bought all their older stuff. British Steel was a very big influence on me as a young musician. I can't listen to their Nostradamus album. Their new album Redemmer of Souls is pure kick ass heavy metal. Buy it if you haven't already.

Better late than never. "British Steel" is arguably one of Priests most notable releases. For what it's worth, if a nubile 20 year old person were to ask me what "heavy metal" was all about, I would simply put this album on for them, have them listen to it from start to finish, and then turn around and tell them this,....THIS!!!! album was one of the best...welcome to heavy metal!!! This is the album that got me into heavy metal back in 1981, as a young dweeb of 22. Today, as a 55 year old, no count, fool, this album still makes sense to me...and I love it! Thanks Kim
