Got the newest by Lynyrd Skynyrd Last Of A Dyin' Breed sent to me as a birthday present. A quick review;
First of all I like this album way better than their last Gods And Guns. Gone is the Van Zandt country music influence that was so strong on that album.(Sorry Jesse) Instead we go back to southern rock stompers such as Last Of A Dyin Breed & Homegrown which is my fave on the album so far. They co-wrote quite a bit of the album once again with John 5 of Marilyn Manson & Rob Zombie fame. Gives sorta a modern feel to the tunes. But not so much that you dont know its Skynyrd. Also one of the bonus tracks Sad Song was co-written with Shaun Morgan of Seether great tune. And I'd love to see them add Nothing Comes Easy to their set list as it would be a very strong live set tune. I give their latest offering an 8 out of 10. Great overall album and a very good Lynyrd Skynyrd album compared to their last offering.

No need to be sorry, Frank. Maybe I have to listen to "God And Guns" again, but I really didn't see any overabundance of Country influence on that CD. Certainly not to the extent of the Van Zant albums. I liked "God And Guns", but after "Vicious Cycle", it was a bit of a let down IMO. Looking forward to "Last Of A Dyin' Breed"....maybe I'll get it for MY birthday! Thanks for the review!

IMO...God and Guns was about the most nauseating album title I ever heard. If it was hailed as being better than (Pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd), I still don't think I would have been able to buy it. That being said, I've heard some samples on this CD...And it seems to me that The Last Rebel is the last good album they've done.

But then again this is the same band with album titles like "Pronounced 'Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd", "Second Helping", "Nuthin' Fancy", "First And Last", "1991" and "Twenty". In that context "God And Guns" was fairly edgy for them. Maybe I have to revist my Skynyrd collection, but other than the title song, I recall "The Last Rebel" being a pretty disappointing album. I always thought "Vicious Cycle" was the best post-crash Skynyrd album, though "Edge Of Forever" was a close second.

I have to say Vicious Cycle is my favorite Skynyrd of them all. followed by Edge Of Forever. But to be honest with I didnt really get into Skynyrd until Ricky Medlock joined the band. I found The Last Rebel album to be to twangy for me.
