I could name quite a few bands where the bass player is very important. Anyone ever hear of Rush? Or how about Iron Maiden?
Anyway, can anyone please explain why Bass players get little respect in the music business?
I think that they deserve respect. What do you guys think?

SOME people may disrespect bass players, but I don't think MANY do. Bass players are the glue that holds everything together in a band and when you have a really good one, the need for a rhythm guitar is nil. At one time, maybe bass players were disrespected by the general public, but I think you may have to go back pretty far to get to that time. At least pre-John Entwistle.

The bass isn't as "up front," loud or flashy as the lead guitar. I get that. But here is a long list of bass players who get a LOT of respect: (some sing lead too, I understand...but I included them anyway)
Geezer Butler John Entwistle SteveHarris Paul McCartney Flea Jack Bruce Lemmy Gene Simmons Jeff Ament Roger Glover Timothy B Schmit Bootsy Collins John McVie Roger Waters Duff McKagan Billy Sheehan Bill Wyman Geddy Lee John Paul Jones Cliff Burton Jason Newsted Mike Gordon Michael Anthony Sting Phil Lynott Dusty Hill Les Claypool

Looks like something from The Onion. The original story even notes that it is satire.

I'm just sick of the people that think Bass players are replaceable. Bunch of bullshit.

It's interesting. I play bass in the current band I am in...even though I have been a guitar player for about 30 years, taught adult guitar at the local tech school and been a superior guitar player to most guys I played bass in bands with(see KISS Tribute) Once in awhile someone will hear or see me play guitar in a live situation...they ALWAYS act like it's some miraculous feat " YOU can play guitar!!!". I NEVER looked down on bass and love playing it...but it is so annoying and stupid to assume because I am the bassist I am some kind of dumbass. It's an EGO check to play bass because it's so derided. Most guys play bass because it's an easy gig to get anhd they aren't ego driven, ham, prima donnas who have to have the spotlight...well there IS Gene Simmons
