I just don't hear anything special with their music.
I know they are talented , but when I listen to them I don't get anything out of them. Maybe its because they are just not heavy enough for me or something.
Your opinion on the Beatles?

I remember calling The Beatles overrated on here & being seriously mauled by more or less everyone for daring to criticize such a beloved commodity. I didn't call them crap you understand, just overrated. I don't see how they changed the face of popular music, because all of the genres they employed throughout their career had finished by the time The Beatles got to them. From the 50's style rock n' roll through the soul-boy mod look of their sharp suits to their later Psychedelia nonsense, all those fads were finished. Hardly innovative. True, many many bands have cited them as an influence, but they themselves were not wholly original. Their first three albums were mainly covers. The argument could be said that if it wasn't for George Martin & Brian Epstein, they wouldn't have left the starting gate. I think late 70's Punk was a more innovative musical force than Beatlemania because it spoke to the Blue Collar workers & inner-city kids. It showed you did not have to be a virtuoso on an instrument so anybody could do it. To me, 'God Save The Queen' by the Sex Pistols is much more important than the hippie tripe of 'I Am The Walrus'. Plus, I'm sorry but while Paul McCartney is happy enough schmoozing with the equally out of touch Royal Family his solo work leaves a lot to be desired! I await the backlash with baited breath.

Hey, I don't get all that excited over the Beatles either. Now, that hardly means I think they "suck", nor does it ndiscount what they've done for the world of Rock'n Roll. Also it doesn't make me an asshole for having different tastes, nor does it make me clueless when it comes to music. It takes all sorts to make the world go around. In, fact, the more people who say things like, "How can you NOT like the Beatles", the more I don't like them. The more people tell me that the Beatles can't possibly be overrated, if anything they are UNDERrated, the more I think they ARE overrated. I do understand how they changed the face of Rock music and how a generation of folks who were around when the Beatles first appeared on Ed Sullivan have a special place in their heart for the Beatles and their music, but I welcome the dissenter just as much, we all have our points of view. For folks my age and younger, who weren't around when the Beatles broke out and just lived through numerous "breakfasts with the Beatles" on any and every Classic Rock station and had countless people telling us how great they were, well, it's hard for any band to live up to that hype. Plus, I believe that better bands have come out since the Beatles. Would they have come out if not FOR the Beatles? That's anybody's guess, but I'm willing to go on record saying that the answer is "probably not". Still, I look at the Beatles as the Model T Ford of music. One can't deny how the Model T changed the world of automobiles, but any that are left have little use in today's world other than nostalgia. Now, to compare cars to music is a bit like......well, comparing cars to music and I understand that music is ALL about nostalgia. So I can certainly see why so many people who lived through the Beatles career hold them in such high regard. I just wish those folks would so much as attempt to understand why I and a few other don't.

You have to remember that until the Beatles 50's style rock was the top dog. Every band after the Beatles took one aspect of their music and made a career out of it. Only Sabbath comes close to influencing as many bands. They may not be my FAVORITE but they certainly are NOT overrated. Evry member of the Beatles had hit songs AFTER leaving the Beatles. The BEATLES have more music sales in the 2000's than any band. That's right, 41 years after they broke up they still sell more albums than EVERY ACT out there.

Mozart had more talent than the Beatles, but does he sell as many albums? No. Not nearly as many. If you opened the dictionary and searched for pop music, the Beatles would have their picture in there. People are brainwashed. Tell people over and over again that the Beatles are god and the best band ever, and people buy into it. There are plenty of artists that came before and after the beatles that are rolling over in their graves by the way because of this. You know who else sells alot of albums but isn't talented? Elvis. He wouldn't know how to write a song if it kicked him in the ass. He was chosen because of his good looks and singing ability. When it came to being an artist, he is about as overrated as they come. Now I'm not saying the Beatles are not talented. They are! But, alot of people buy their albums because they have been brainwashed to believe that the Beatles are the holy grail of music.

You really think that the folks who grew up with the Beatles and are in their 60's and 70's are who is buying their stuff? You talk like everyone but you is a sheep that buys into anything that they are told. It's insulting, incorrect, and coming from you, expected. The facts can't be changed. The Beatles were one of if not the biggest influence in rock n roll. I know lots of people that don'ty like the Beatles and love the Stones. But even they know that without the Beatles showing Mick and Keith that they needed to write their own music (the Beatles wrote one for them), maybe the Stones never develop and never break out... Also, the comment that the Beatles style of dress over the years was borrowed and on the way out is totally inaccurate. The Beatles MADE wearing a suit (1963) the cool thing and many others in England followed. The Beatles MADE wearing psychedelic shit (1967) popular and many followed. The Beatles MADE long hair the cool thing (1962). It's one thing to find reasons to back an argument, but at least be accurate.

I think the degree of how much you like the Beatles depends on where you rank songwriting in you hierarchy of importance when it comes to music. Those who prefer style or the ability to play an instrument (like Steve Vai) over songwriting (like Dylan), isn’t going to rank the Beatles all that high on their list. Also, people who focus on “heaviness” won’t be the biggest fan either.
It’s kinda like when you are checking out a chick. What do you like best? Eyes? Boobs? Legs? Booty? Hair? Depending on what you like best, will determine where you rank certain girls.

Sounds like you are haters ;D Please don't lump me in with BlueCheer and DR Jones. While I see their points to an extent, I believe they are overstating their case. The Beatles had p[lenty of talent, were innovators and influenced Rock music like no other band before or since.......I just don't care for them all that much. For the record, I know I USED TO talk like they do about the Beatles, but in talking to folks who grew up with the Beatles, I am more inclined to see YOUR point of view. I am trying to see both sides here and am not sure why this has to be such a divisive issue.

However, I'd like to point out that it's not just about songwriting, it's also about the style of songwriting. For whatever reason, I am just not into their style of songwriting even though I am a songwriting-minded when it comes to my tastes. U2 is another band lauded for their songwriting and I really don't like them at all. With music it's ALL about personal likes and dislikes and what you grew up with. You can't tell me I should love the Beatles any more than I should be telling you that you should love Molly Hatchet.

Seriously?...where the fuck were you in 1964 when The Beatles hit American soil pal?...huh?...HUH??? Give your head a shake young fella for you know not what you speak of. You haven't got a clue when it comes to music, life, or anything else related to either of the genres...trust me...you've proved as much in your statements, posts and responses since you've been a member here in regards to any topic posted yet we have collectively tolerated the drivel that you espouse and go on about ...Good on us huh!!! Better yet...GOOD ON YOU...but I will tell you this my boy...when you start making no sense whatsover about Elvis, or The Beatles, then you, my friend start chipping away at the foundation of classic rock as I know it...and that, THAT...my boy...is where I have to draw the line. Best for you to go back and pick up some of the older music...start with some of the stuff that influenced Elvis...then continue on with some of what influenced The Beatles...and I'm just not talking about one of them. Read a book! Check out who influenced John Lennon...or Paul...or George or yes...even Richard Starky. And for what it's worth, I don't need to hear further fromothers about how "baaaad" John was or how fucked up Paul got to the point where he was busted in Japan for hemp...We all know that...at least I do...We know that and that has nothing to do with their musical legacy for fuck sakes! Nirvana, Guns and Roses...enuf already....The Beatles have them beat hands down in terms of a legacy. Simply put, this outfit had a pretty good run, in terms of music over a very, very short 8 year career...yet made a huge impact on the music at the time, and the days ahead. Anyone that believes otherwise simply has their head in the sand. I challenge anyone that has little knowledge of their catalogue, to at least give it a listen. Surely there is one genre or era that would find a place in your heart........Why you ask?......because they ran the gamut in all of them...genres I mean. Okay, so, the best thing I can suggest is this...you want Beatle variety...go to The White Album. I promise...there will be at least ONE song on that album that you'll "kinda like"...and after a few spins..."really like"! Blue...you really need to check these guys out. Open your mind. Trust me...it'll all come together for you when you do. Thanks Kim
