Anybody care? This is coming up in, what, 10 days or so? I could care less, but everyone on TV and radio seems to be talking about it. Not sure if this is on anyone's radar screen, but I thought I'd post a thread anyways. I don't think there is anyone from Britain here, but I know we have a few Canucks here and I believe the Royal family is still the official mascot of Canada.
Like you Jesse, and as a Canuck, I too, could care less.
It's a lot of hype and hoopla over something that we really
have no part or say in.
I for one do not consider Britain as our mascot even though
we have the "queen's" profile on a lot of our currency...which I still
don't understand??? I thought we got away from that when the
1982 constitution thing was signed by Pierre and Vicky???
Being the kind of folk that we appear to be however, we'll put up
with damned near anything and it wouldn't surprise me in the least
if some of hard earned tax dollars, in some way shape or form is
funneled towards the upcoming "gala event" on the 29th of this month.
Being classified as a multicultural nation, I find it difficult to wrap my mind around the fact that we are still connected with the monarchy
in the manner that we are, both in a political or cultural sense?
Consider that as of the 2001 Census, Chinese ws the 3rd most spoken language in this country...closing in on French as the second most spoken.
Not to get into linguistics to any further degree, I have to chuckle at the way in which Canada still insists on embracing the British pomp and ceremony here on Canuck soil.
Nothing against it, but there are so many other nationalities that rank quite highly in terms of importance on an increasing basis...not to mention the erosion of some of the original tongues native to this land.
Like Britain, I guess we as Canucks still feel some affection for the ongoings of the Monarchy, and will continue to do so until it eventually fades...which may take another 100 years?
By that time, I suspect that Mandarin Chinese or Punjabi will be the
language of the country, even if unofficially.
For what it's worth, the hype doesn't appear to be as great as the
Charles / Diana gig back in 81' and I'm not certain if we'll be issuing
commemorative coins and stamps as we did back then?
All I know is that I'll be sending along a card with a coupon for a toaster
redeemable at Canadian Tire...and if Willy boy plays his cards right, he can use the "Canadian Tire Money" for a discount on his next oil change here in Canuckville! ;D
(Sure hope nobody else gets them a toaster???)
Thanks
Kim
