I just did some investigating. I took a look at all the top 40 lists from the late 80's. It has been proven to me that the reason why rock is not in the top 40 is because rock bands are not making ballads anymore like they were back in the day.

Go back to the 70's, you'd be surprised at how many Rock classics cracked the top 40. Even hitting the covetted #1 spot on occasion.

Because most hard rock bands never released many singles.

Its amazing they do this now. That wasn't your original question. Your original question was "Why has top 40 NEVER been kind to Rock music". Many of, what we now call "Classic Rock" song were indeed chart toppers. Even in recent history, the likes of Nickelback, Green Day, All American Rejects and such have charted. You may think those bands suck, but they certainly are Rock.
