I honestly thought, years & years ago, that the "Van Hagar" version of Van Halen would be forever!

Silvertide ...at least a few more albums would've been nice.
Tesla ...it's soooo wierd/interesting to be close to these guys (from the beginning) and see the entire cycle of 'rising', 'making it', 'breaking up' and ultimately 'reunion'. Jeff was tremendously focused. Just about every conversation I had with him was about getting "signed" and having all the effort pay off. Apparently there wasn't a plan to keep the machine going after the initial triumph.
American Dog... probably just a hope that they'd stay together more than an actual belief they'd endure.

Van Hagar - Sam and Ed seemed to be musical soulmates.

I find your answers interesting because, by the time I got into Classic Rock (mid-80's), most of the groups had disbanded. That said, I have a couple:
Guns'n Roses was a train wreck from the get-go, but I thought they would've lasted longer than they did.
Kentucky Headhunters looked like a bunch of good ol' boys that were in it for the long haul, but only lasted 2 albums in it's original incarnation as the Phelps brothers (bassist Doug and singer Rickey Lee) left at the height of their popularity in 1992. That said, Doug Phelps DID return as their new singer and the 4/5 original Kentucky Headhunters band has stayed together since the late 90's.
Heart was going pretty strong on their second go-round when I got into them. Seemed like they could keep going, but they unravelled rather fast after 1991.
