I never thought that much of her but in this past decade I've been listening to her a little more & definitely see the talent. I really think her back-up bands did not do justice to her voice. Her & Johnny Winter were an item for a while & I wish they would have collaborated together. Winter would occasionally jam w/her at festivals

......and WHY pray, does JJ suck??! Most people do not like her because she was said to be "a man in woman's clothes...." ....she wasn't thought of as being a sex symbol of course, but to say that she sucked MUSICALLY is pure HERESY!!!! . Grace Slick, one of Janis's ONLY true friends doesn't think so and neither do the boys in Grateful Dead. She led a typically hippie lifestyle and abused of many "things", but she was also much ABUSED OF:( . She might not have been a "star", but she SURE knew how to bring out the blues with all the bands she performed with

I've been downloading a few of her tunes. Started getting into her and Dusty Springfield.

Not really my cup of tea either, but "sucks" is kinda harsh. She did her thing and was good at it, but it was nothing I ever felt like listening to.

Your reply is pure biased personal jargon...no consistency musically speaking...you might not like her music, but it should end there:) !!

I love her tunes! ...don't give, don't care, don't even think about the "look"... that's me anyways. Her voice has soulful passion. She's fucking terrific! The ol' Bluesy-Folksy Rock is like thick'n rich cake. Weighty and fun to listen to.

OK, Perhaps she doesn't suck, but she is way overhyped and overrated. When it comes to blues singers, or even rock singers, there were plenty that preceded her and followed her that were far better and much less recognized. Woman who really lead the way in a man's world. Who you ask? Well, Besse Smith, Koko Taylor, Etta James, Dinah Washington, Memphis Minnie, Blu Lou Barker, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone, Ma Rainey, Eva Taylor, Ruth Brown, Bonnie Raitt, Marcia Ball, Ethyl Waters, Susan Tedeschi, Shemekia Copeland, LaVern Baker, Stevie Nicks, Ida Cox, Bettye LaVette, Lou Anne Barton, Irma Thomas, Deborah Coleman...I can go on and on. I'm not saying that all of these singers are better than Janis Joplin. That is all a matter of taste. What I'm saying is that Janis Joplin who's career was relatively short, was nothing unique and had been preceded by so many other brave and talented woman who had faced much more adversity, drank much more liquor and were more hard living, sassy, strong woman. She was among the first white woman who helped bridge the gap between blues and rock music which clearly, along with her untimely death, lead to a high level of recognition in the music world.

Seeing as this thread has been dead for a few years...one thing happened after this thread was dead for me & Janis Joplin...(& l don't mean put down the almighty Led Zep because they were a great band...legendary...I personally like them but there are many many bands I prefer...anyway...) I have a playlist of about 4000 songs on my iPod that the wife and I listen to when we are in the car. One day we were listening to the playlist & Piece of my Heart by Joplin came on. It sounded fine...no different than any other time I've listened to it but what followed that tune was Black Dog by Zep (great tune & probably in my top ten Zep tunes). I don't know why it hit me like it did but I turned to my wife and said "Wow, this sounds like a low budget version of Janis Joplin singing!". Had I not heard the tunes back to back I wouldn't have thought nothing of it. Of course I still listen to Zep more than Joplin but it makes me wonder if Plant was influenced by Joplin's style of singing
