Name some bands that would not do well in the bar scene if they played their original music and no one ever heard of them before?
Pink Floyd comes to mind. Same with Wishbone Ash, and King Crimson.
Those are just a couple I can think of off the top of my head. Reason being is because we all know that bars are made for a certain type of crowd. Which is sad because we all know on this board how great those bands music is. The average person in a bar just does not have the attention span, and they just can't appreciate these types of bands music.

That totaly depends on the bar. I know of two bars where Pink Floyd would be encouraged. If you played Black Eyed Peas in there I'd likely get thrown out or at least charged double for my beer. I know bars where you wouldn't be able to hear Pink Floyd over the loud pulsing dance beats except maybe Wycliff Jean's remix of his own remake of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here.

Yes it does depend on the bar, I agree. But for example bars that make their income on cover bands. Pink Floyd, Wishbone Ash, and King Crimson type bands would not do well. Don't you agree?

Are there any bars though that build their clientle on original music? Not really. Everytime you go to a bar, more than likely their live entertainment will be a cover band.

That is not true in all cases though. I used to DJ at a Classic Rock club in Texas. Every band we had on used to do their own music. Okay so they had to play in a Classic Rock style or have a Classic Rock sound to their music but nobody missed them doing covers as their own stuff was usually pretty good. In between I could play the usual gumph from The Stones, Skynyrd etc so the people had the best of both worlds. As for Pink Floyd, they started off in bars.

Every band has to start off in bars. I am just saying that the bar crowd is very hard to win over with your own original music. I've seen some great bands out there that play original music. But you always have that dumb fuck who says "Can you play free bird?" Shut the fuck up and let the band take you on a musical journey. Once people get drinks in them they always want to hear something familiar. I never understood that because I love having a band perform their art, instead of the same shit I have heard 1,000,000 times before.
