Why is it that a promoter might be lucky to fill a venue up half full if they hire a classic rock band to play at a club that caters to young people?
But if that same promoter would hire a DJ that plays hip hop/house/techno, you would have a packed joint filled with young people with a line out the door and around the block.
I've seen this time and time again over the last 10 years, but as much as I have tried to understand why kids and young adults prefer dj's, its hard for me to do so because I love classic rock and live bands.
So back to the question at hand. Why does the majority of young people of today prefer to go to a club that has a dj playing techno and hip hop over a venue that has a great live band that plays classic rock covers and originals?

Personal preference. Aslo, party atmosphere vs. concert. It's also easier at a club with a dj for young people to dry hump on the dance floor and hip hop is more popular than classic rock.

Even with bands, you can't just play whatever you want. Bars and clubs are totally different than a concert venue. As lame as it may sound, most young folks who go to a club or music bar, go to dance. As cool as it would be to see a band at a bar play "Green Grass And High Tides", few, if anybody, will get on the dance floor for it. Again, this sounds lame, but a guy I know in a very popular bar/club band in my area told me one time that " you play music the chicks can dance to. If the girls like you and follow you around from bar to bar, the guys will follow them!" Lame but true. It doesn't work the other way around. I know, I've tried it.

Yes Jesse I agree. There are some bands out there that would never be popular in the bar/club scene. One band that comes to mind is Pink Floyd. They are made for live music showcase concert venues. Another band that comes to mind would be King Crimson or Wishbone Ash.

This is precisely how it works around here. (N. California)
