I see so many people that are now in their 50's, and they don't like 80's rock . I find this interesting. First off when this shit was coming out, these people were in their 20's.
Maybe music had passed them by back then, and at the time that 80's bands were coming out, they already had their favorite bands and found that 80's rock was "kid" music.
Sort of how I feel with the music kids are listening to today.
No, I don't think that people in their 50's dislike 80's rock.
People in their 50's loved 80's rock.
People in their 40's loved
80's rock because it's the stuff that they were conflicted with
compared to the mainstream 90's stuff of their day.
(The 80's for them, was like the 60's to us in the 70's)...
Think about it...they had a bit of a hard time...but they're
coming around...
People in their 30's these days really love 80's rock because it's the stuff they first heard and grew up with.
Kinda like me listening to The Beatles.
The thing is, like the 70's and the 60's, the people in their
50's today had so much to choose from back in those decades
in terms of music.
What happened to the folks in their 50's today, in my opibion, is that with the 80's, WE became a wee bit more critical in our choices and in the acceptance of the music as it was changing before our eyes back then.
A lot of us now took the conscious effort to speak out aginst what we felt at the time was a departure from the days of old that we once held true to what we believed in music wise.
Some of us did NOT care for Guns and Roses. Some of us did not want to hear the impending arrival of Grunge Rock, some of us
had little or no tolerance for "Alternative" rock...simply because
SOME OF US were still waiting for the next release of the groups and artists that we had come to know and love from the last 15 years or so growing up with.
That being said, we still found our way through the music and depending on what particular era of the so called 80's we refer to, there was a ton of good shit.
Early 80's? Hell...tons of stuff! I can populate a list here, but I don't think it's necessary, yet if anyone wants to assist...by all means...help me out and "have at er"! ;D
Start from Jan 1 1980 and go to Dec. 31 1989.
Tell me what we have...I'll tell you what I like...hahaha.
Mid 80's? Van Halen hit's the mark. Springsteen pretty much becomes a household name, Dire Straights...need I say more?
Even the vets...Fogerty hits big with "Centerfield"...and all along the way, I'm talking commercial artists.
Shit!...Jethro Tull won heavy metal group of the year in the
later 80's!!!
Damn...and then Harrison gets his groove on yet again...only to trump himself as a fucking Wilbury!!!
Go figure!
I'll hedge a bet that Jesse, Pete, Spacel0rd, and Speedy can come up with a ton of great 80's examples on the "reeeeally" great rock front here in regards to music...much better than I can, but I'll say this...being 50 or so has nothing to do with the 80's...it all depends on how you were in the 80's and what you liked in the 80's that makes a difference for who you are now
in 2010!
It's quite simple...we do the math...we listen to the music and it all makes sense...there is no theory...there is no sense to be made of the entire situation...other than the obvious...and even then...there will be anomalies...............
In ten years from now...ask me why your nephew likes
Led Zep.....................I'll have an answer for you. ;D
Thanks
