I don't think that everyone is "copying" everyone else?
That's like saying, "Nobody goes there anymore because it's
too crowded"....
There appears to be a vast variety of music out there...not
only these days, but has been witnessed from days of past.
I do agree though, that a lot of the crap does sound the same as far as the obligatory "Top 40" or what corporate North America
wants us to hear and listen to...however...
A majority of it just never seemed to catch on. A good majority never had the exposure that was required to make it "mainstream"...and otherwise finding the ability to find it's way into or onto, if you will, the general populations playlist.
These days especially, music has a greater opportunity to find it's target audience and corporate radio is no longer at the top of the list like it once was.
Personally, these days, I find that it's up to the listener to scope out the music that is more to their liking.
Sure, we're still witness to the execs that find a so called..."Shooting Star" and ultimately gets thrust down our
collective throats, but unlike the days of yesteryear...we also
have the choice of disregarding that so called trend.
Can anyone here imagine...25 years ago? Justin Beeber would
be blaring into our living rooms and kitchens...simply put because we really had very little "real estate" on the dials of our radios...and would patiently, albeit frustratingly await the next song to come along.
That's not the case these days...and in fact, a good portion of the listening public now have choices to the degree, that some of us...myself included, can honestly say...that I wouldn't know a
"Beeber" track from the theme song to "Leave It To Beaver" on late nite tv?
These days, independent artists are finding that they are being
heard. Are they making money like their predecessors did back in the day? No, not to the extent where they get their pics and musical output gets splashed all over the next cover of the latest and greatest Music sourced magazine.
We see the "forced" stars of today and any of us here can surely predict, within months as to when their so called "rising star" is about to peak and begin to fall.
Marilyn Manson?...where's he these days?
Brittney Spears...whatever the spelling is...
Hanna Montana?
...just to mention a recent few.
Lady Gaga...any bets on how much longer she has?
Pink?...already has the Greatest Hits release out...(ask me how I know...sheesh...my wife likes her).
There's about 2 million of em with a show and act just waiting
in line to take over once they fizzle out...and guess what?
There's 1 billion fans waiting in line to encourage them!
Now...we have the old stuff. The music from these past
great artists still sell. That's why we love the music.
Then...THEN!...there is still artists like The Rolling Stones or Bruce Springsteen, as an example...that have never failed...have never stopped...have never let us down...simply because their presence
is tantamount to what great music is all about...and knows no bounds when it comes to longevity, creativity and experience in
showing the collective fans over the years just what it takes to
always attempt to be #1.
Whether they achieve such a goal is certainly subjective...but bottom line...I reeeeeally can't see Lady Gaga expecting the same results in 10 years, let alone 20 years from now.
That said...there is a lot of good music out there...but most of it won't be witnessed by watching Entertainment Tonight or tuning into your local Top 40 radio station these days.
Like other aspects of our lives...more and more, we are being left to our own devices to decide what's good, what isn't, what we like and what we don't like...and go from there.
Gotta love it.
Thanks
Kim
