Well, I'm back. So far, so good. The wedding was awesome. There's something to be said for waiting until later in life to get married. We had the coolest wedding ever.........although, we are admittedly biased . We had about a 1/2 hour ceremony, then took a horse and carriage ride back from the Church to our family farm for pictures. Pam (my wife) and my Dad had decorated the farm all up with pumpkins, mums and bales of straw for picts and I had parked our newest tractor (a Case IH) and our oldest tractor (a Farmall cub) on a hill for some more picts. I must say, the horse and carriage ride was the most relaxing part of our day. Pam and I, along with some members of our wedding party got up early and decorated the reception hall ourselves. Pam and I had decorated the church ourselves the day before. Everything was a blur except for the carriage ride. Anyone getting married, I highly recommend you do something like that to relax and get ready for phase 2 of the wedding (pictures and the reception). Oh and the carraige ride was extra special because it was my uncle and his horse "Blue" giving us the carriage ride. That was just cool as shit. My uncle offered to do the same thing for my sister and 3 of his 4 kids who got married, but Pam and I were the only ones who took him up on his offer. I think we made his day as much as he made ours.
We got tons of pictures at the farm, then took a limo to the reception. We had great food, most folks filled up on the hors d'ouerves and had to get their meal boxed to take home. We had the wedding party introduced to MY song choices. Among others, my 86 year-old grandparents were introduced to George Jones' "I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair". I had Shambles drummer Tony and his corresponding bridesmaid introduced with "Walking On Sunshine" (Tony, back in the 80's, found himself as a fill-in drummer for Katrina and The Waves, so it was kinda an inside joke). My sister Jenny, along with my brother-in-law were introduced using Tommy Tutone's "Jenny (867-5309)". And Pam and I were introduced using................you guessed it Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin' With Disaster". Fucking awesome! I couldn't smile big enough. How cool was that?
The whole reception was our kind of music: Country, Southern Rock and Classic Rock. A few wedding standards, but mostly our own chosen tunes including: Henry Paul's version of "Brown Eyed Girl", Love And Theft's "Runaway", "Big Green Tractor" by Jason Aldean, Ronnie McDowell's "Older Women" (Pam didn't want that one played, but the DJ snuck it in for me anyhow ;D), "Jesse's Girl" (DUH!), James Brown's "I Got You" (I Feel Good), Blackfoot's "Highway Song", Tom T Hall's "I Like Beer" (Fucking classic!), "Devil Went Down To Georgia" and The Shambles "Hard Way To Rock". Shambles being my original band with drummer Tony and guitar/bass player Dave. For "Hard Way..." the DJ brought the microphone out for me to sing, but I informed him that Dave actually sang that song. So he took the mic to Dave and Dave turned in a memorable performance! The Dj had already given out black and red plastic fedora hats and white and purple feathered boas to get people into going out on the dance floor. Dave already had a red fedora on and as he took the mic and started singing, someone gave him a white boa. Man, he just ate up the spotlight, singing over his own song and putting on a performance as if he were "Just A Giggolo"-era David Lee Roth. CLASSIC!
Oh, let's see, we cut the cake and fed eachother without smashing the cake into eachother's faces (too cliche!) We didn't do a Father/Bride or Mother/Groom dance because her father lives in South Carolina and was too ill to make the trip up for us. I could've done a mother/Groom dance, but my mom didn't want to bring attention to the fact that she had no one to dance with. We settled on a family dance where everyone just dances with a family member. I got to dance with my Mom then......and I also spun off and danced with my 2 Aunts too. My Grandparents had celebrated their 65th (YES SIXTY-FIFTH!!!) Wedding anniversary earlier in the week, so the DJ played a special song for them. Pam got my Grandfather up to dance and I danced with my Grandmother for a bit, then we led them to eachother for the rest of the song and for that song, the night was about them, not us.
We ended the night with Journey's "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever". Kinda sappy, but not nearly as cliche as "Faithfully" or "Open Arms". Not to let everyone go home on a sad note, the very last song was Dwight Yoakam's version of "Suspicious Minds". Got everyone out on the dance floor for that one.
Overall a great day and night. Everything we had planned for went exactly as anticipated. My only complaint was that it went by too fast, we really couldn't savor the day like I had hoped, but it was awesome.
Thank you for reading this far and for all the well wishes on the other thread. Couldn't have asked for better weather, a better wedding, a better reception or a better day.
