Great choice with Richrath I'd also say Ronnie Wood of the Faces & Stones & Rich Williams of Kansas. Johnny Winter,Rick Derringer, & Kim Mitchell are all amazing guitarists

Oh boy, this again! Michael Schenker - -UFO- & MSG (Crazy man, nut-bar, whacked out muther f'er, manic-tortured-soul, aptly nicknamed Mad Axe Man for good reason. But his endless, year after year onslaught of magnificent hooks and irresistable rythms make him one of the most compelling there is. ) Ulrich (Uli) Roth -Scorpions (Probably the best to ever trod the soil of the Earth... amazing virtuosity and such rockin' tunes! ) Billy Gibbons -ZZ Top (All his fingers look like thumbs but when he plays, it doesn't sound as such.) Andy Sommers (sp?) -The Police (Yes. Really. This guy's unique style apparently goes over the heads of most folks) Pat Travers -Pat Travers (Gawd. I love his music! ) Gary Moore -Gary Moore (Swerves wildly from one style to the next. ...always top-drawer! ) Alex Lifeson -Rush (So underrated it's sad, actually)

Pretty close to what Trexx says for me: Michael Schenker - When he's got his shit together ... Pat Travers is another too ... Steve Lukather (Toto) Lawrence Archer (Stampede, UFO, Grand Slam) Vinny Burns (Dare, Asia, Bob Catley, FM, Ten - I can't stand Ten for Gary Hughes vocals though.) Jeff Watson (Night Ranger, Mothers Army) Van McLain (Shooting Star) I could go on, couldn't we all!

Some good ones mentioned. I'll add:
Toy Caldwell-Marshall Tucker Band. Great player, had a unique sound because he played using his thumb as a pick.
Hughie Thomasson/Billy Jones-The Outlaws. Outstanding Strat/Les Paul combo if there ever was one. Probably the most talented guitar combo in Southern rock INCLUDING Dickey Betts/Duane Allman and Rossington/Collins.
Mick Jones-Foriegner. Never gets credit for being a great guitarist because he wrote song-oriented songs. Some of which don't even feature a guitar solo. Still, outstanding is concert.
Charlie Daniels/Tom Crain-Charlie Daniels Band. Daniels made a name for himself as a fiddle player, but he can play damn good guitar too. With complicated licks played in unison with Tommy Crain, CDB was a hillbilly Iron Maiden.
Howard Leese-Heart. I've banged this drum for a while, but Leese was originally Heart's keyboardist and took over on guitar after Roger Fischer was fired. I think he outplayed Fischer and Heart has yet to find a replacement to adaquateely fill Leese's shoes.
Leslie West-Mountain. Best vibratto in the busines bar none!
CC Deville-Poison. No, not a joke. Only underrated because everyone keeps telling me he sucks. Trust me, he doesn't suck.

I'd also mention Tom Scholz of Boston. He may not best technically but he is pretty much responsible for the Boston sound and has invented a lot of guitar technology. I read somewhere once that he's making more money from his patents than he is from Boston.

After seeing a DirectTV concert of Asia a few weeks ago and one of Yes this past weekend, I'd have to put Steve Howe on that underrated list. He IS usually acknowledged as a great guitarist and is on pretty much every "Great guitarist" list that's ever come out, but usually not nearly high enough. The guy is easily among the greatest who ever picked up a guitar.......and this is a guy who kinda "creeps me out" who plays in 2 bands that I more often than not find tedious and sometimes boring to listen to.......but the guy can play REALLY well.

Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser
Buck Dharma's guitar playing is the signature sound of Blue Öyster Cult. One of the greatest guitarists of our time, Buck is the driving sonic force of Blue Öyster Cult, and continues to push his playing in new uncharted directions. A master from the beginning, he plays with an ease and grace that puts most players to shame. An extremely expressive player, Buck doesn't let any note go to waste. Each has something to say, if you're willing to listen.
Buck's talents don't stop at the humbucking pickups, either. Buck is a gifted songwriter and excellent singer. His smooth vocal style has graced the Dharma-penned hits "Don't Fear the Reaper" and "Burnin' For You" as well as several of the new songs on Curse of the Hidden Mirror. His voice contrasts and complements the sharper-edged style of lead vocalist Eric Bloom.
Buck's songwriting juxtaposes alluring chord progressions, melodic textures and fascinating lyrical ideas with the best parts of pop music, to create songs that are definitively "Buck." "Pocket" and "Stone of Love" on Curse of the Hidden Mirror are two classic examples of Buck tracks.
