I'll catch hell for this but my vote goes for the "great" Jimmy Page. I always found him to be a little sloppy, especially when compared to the likes of Ritchie Blackmore.

You won't catch hell from me because I'd say Jimmy Page & Jimi Hendrix. Of the three name ex Yardbird guitarists(I say 3 because Top Toham wasn't their long enough & Chris Dreja just played rhythm) Page was the worst ( not that he was bad but he was nothing compared to Beck or Clapton). That 25 minute version of Dazed & Confused is about as useless as Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music album. I do like about 80 minutes worth of Zeppelin music & I like it alot but Page is overrated. As Mick Jagger sang on the live version of "Star Star": "Jimmy Page was quite a rage I cannot see the reason why!" Hendrix is the same & I thought Alvin Lee blew him away in the Woodstock movie

My vote is for the internationally adored Eric Clapton. Why that guy is so revered is beyond me. I have yet to hear anything that guy has done that is so mindblowing. The last album he did worth any type of merit is the Derek & The Dominoes one. His solo work is stale, bland, out of touch, dated & tedious beyond belief. 'God' my arse!

I concur with about 98% of your assesment. Slow Hand? BLAND!

There wasn't a sloppier live player IMO than Hendrix. Also for him to still be considered the best ever 40 years after his death? C'mon. Guitar playing has gone to whole new levels the last 40 years. Hendrix is great, but overrated.
Neil Young. Hey, he's a fine songwriter. I like "Ol' Neil" as much as anyone, but somebody tell Rolling Stone and Guitar World that he is no guitar hero. I have tapes of myself jamming on guitar in my teens when I didn't know a thing about guitar that sound better than Young's "Southern Man" solo.
The Edge-U2. I get him. I really do. He writes heavenly anthems, has this jangely, clean guitar tone with sweeping delays and is in one of the most popular bands ever. But guitar hero he is not. Again, somebody tell Rolling Stone and Guitar World. I've said it before and I'll say it again: The best guitar solo in the U2 catalog was by BB King.
Duane Allman-Allman Brothers Band. Underrated as a slide guitarist, overrated as a guitar player in general. Dickey Betts was always the better lead guitarist and Betts wrote all the memorable ABB songs.

What defines a guitar hero? Just because someone doesn’t appeal to you, that doesn’t mean that they don’t appeal to others. While I’m not a big U2/Edge fan, I bet more kids have picked up the guitar because of him than every shred weenie combined.
If guitar playing was based strictly on speed/chops, then Jimi wouldn’t be anywhere near legendary. But for those of us who get off on feel, emotion, and improvisation, Jimi is still one of the best ever. There are many guitarists who could easily wipe the floor with Jimi when it comes to chops. But 99% of those guys never approached anything near the level of beauty and feeling of, just to name one song, Little Wing.
Regarding Duane Allman, his solo on Boz Scaggs’ version of Loan Me A Dime is one of the best solos in the history of popular music. It is perfect for the song.

Don't bust my balls for my opinions when you haven't even offered up your own. Avril Lavigne has inspired lots of young girls to pick up a guitar, should she be regarded as highly as The Edge? Every guitar player has their own "feel", who's to say Jimi' "feel" was the best? And I never said he wasn't one of the best, I just don't think he is THE best, and too many people IMO do. Daune Allman is one of my favorite guitar players and the Allman Brothers are one of my favorite bands, but Betts was the better guitar player in that line up. Who do YOU think is overrated?
