Would you say that people who live in the "boondocks" prefer 80's metal over genres such as country, or southern rock?
I am finding it very hard to find people from rural areas to like 80's rock the best. I don't find too many of these people choosing Loudness or Shotgun Messiah, or even Motley crue over bands such as Taylor Swift, Montgomery Gentry, or Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Hell yeah there's plenty of rural people that are metalheads. Every state in the union had their own little sunset strip back in 80s.

I live in a rural area and ROCK is KING here. A country band cannot get arrested. I even play AMISH parties filled with thousands of screaming Amish.

I would say yes. Around here in the rural areas rock of all kinds 80,70s etc is still very popular along with country. Speedy is off his rocker though. Around here the Amish listen to electronica and techno.

You're kinda comparing Apples to oranges. It is 2010. You mention Taylor Swift and Montgomery Gentry being more popular than Shotgun Messiah and Loudness. DUH! Taylor Swift is topping the country charts and crossing over to Pop charts. Even back in the '80's I don't recall ever hearing Loudness on the radio. This is akin to saying that people in the City prefer Usher and 50 Cent over Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings. Double duh! But I'm sure when they were popular they had their fair share of fans in the cities. I think they were called "Urban Cowboys". Same with '80's Metal. My area is NOW pretty much a suburb of Philadelphia, but when I was growing up it was pretty rural. I mean, we still had dirt roads. And there were plenty of Metal Heads in my schools.

Taylor Swift is one of my favorite country singers to look at.

Is that where the Amish kids take off year or so after they turn 18 to see if they wanna give the real world a shot? I saw a doc. on that somwhere.

Going back to the query...
There's plenty of cowboys and jarheads in my area. The rockers are easy to spot. "Black tee shirts and no cowboy hats!" It seems that whenever a jukebox hijacking is underway at the local watering hole by the shit-kickers, there's always a Metal-Rivit-Head to step up and break the fillibuster. ....makes me soooo proud. It's really cool how we, rockers relate to one another and assert our influence and possibly risk bodily harm to put on Y&T or Monster Magnet to clear the air. Of interesting note: The common ground is "Hard Country". That genre with Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard that get the nod, equally. The Motherlode (N. California foothills on West side of the Sierra Nevada range) has a interesting mix of folks and has a culture all it's own.
