I see more people wanting to hear top 40 bullshit when they go out to a bar than some Deep Purple or Thin Lizzy. I don't really understand this cause my favorite music is classic rock. I would rather hear Chiild in Time anyday over what the radio plays. But from what I have witnessed, I don't see alot of people into classic rock that much anymore. Once in a while someone will surprise me by playing something that I enjoy. But overall, most people in the bar scene just don't seem to get the same kind of music I am into.

People have been saying this for decades...with classic rock is still around. I would say over the last 5-6 years, there have been more new classic-rock sounding bands than in recent memory. Also... -Roger Waters is selling out Arenas without the rest of Floyd...and tickets costing 210-70 dollars. -Rush does well every time they tour...and will be raking it in this Summer with their Time Machine tour. -AC/DC just debuted in the top ten with a Iron Man 2 CD with NO NEW MUSIC on it. -VH1 Classic's That Metal Show keeps rolling on, season to season. - The Beatles are "alive" and strong with their own Rock Band game now. -Bob Dylan just set a record last year for being the oldest artist to ever debut at #1 on the album chart. -Journey is an arena band again WITHOUT STEVE PERRY. You can't base the popularity of Classic Rock on the musical taste of some young bimbos in a bar on a Friday Night.

I think it's the biggest since the 70's. More people are going back to their roots. The children of those original classic rockers are turning their kids onto classic rock, Stones, Beatles, Doors, Zep, etc. The last few times I was in a record store I seen girls each time buying classic rock items, one being a Beatles abby road poster, another buying a Grand Funk (red) album (cd) - another buying Led Zeppelin box set. They are getting smarter with music because there are really no current "trends" musically in American at this time. Classic Rock is "Classic" because it's stands the test of time or we wouldn't still be hearing it. It's still all over the radio like it never went away. So my answer is "Fuck no!" Kids are also into classic album collecting, I know a few. P.S. Go to a different bar! ;D

Where I live if you go to the downtown bars they're all going to be playing dance music, Top 40 or have a dj but in most of the out lying areas when they have juke boxes you'll hear at least half rock and classic rock. We have two major rock stations most playing mostly 70s, 80s and 90s rock, a strictly classic rock station, one new rock station and only two top 40 stations and one urban. I don't know if rock will ever be top 40 again like it has in the past but it's not dead. A lot of the artists will likely die long before the music dies out.

From what I have witnessed, if I hear rock in a bar around here, 99 percent of the time its what you hear on top 40 radio. Good example people play the shit out of Nickelback at the bars I have been going to. I never ever have heard anyone play Deep Purple or Cream for example. Its the same old fuckin songs all day long it seems. Or they play Taylor Swift or Rascal Flatts. Then the worst is when they play some top 40 hip hop garbage. To go hear cool classic rock I have to drive 60 miles north to Chicago and the suburbs. They have tons of live bands and people who play classic rock in that area.

Maybe I should have labeled this thread as ...... "Is Classic rock not as popular in rural areas, compared to metropolitan ones? " LOL

I actually like some top 40. Rock and classic rock is of course my favorite but there is enough top 40 I can get into that it doesn't bother me that much.

Whenever I go into a bar with a Jukebox, I immediately hijack it. If they're playing Nickelback, I play Deep Purple. If they're playing Taylor Swift, I'll play Emmylou Harris. If they're playing a 20 minute Dave Matthews Band song, I play the live version of "Green Grass And High Tides". Believe it or not, I usually over hear the young'uns asking who I just played because it is AWESOME!

I also always hi jack the juke box. I'll drop 20 - 30 dollars if I'm gonna be there awhile.

Maybe in Europe where I'm currently working the situation is not that bad. I mean, people in the 25 - 45 age range still listen to DP or Zep or Thin Lizzy or the Rolling Stones and the younger bunch are picking it up even if slowly (esp in Italy!! ), where it's all WIMPY Lady gaga crap still!! . Let's not forget that there are new bands out there like The Union, Airbourne, American Dog, etc. that are contributing to the comeback of 'classic rock'.

.....oh I fogot to mention that 'classic psychedelic rock' is still at it strong, e.g. Jefferson Airplane/ Starship, Grateful Dead, the Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, etc.

If I hear Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" I counter with Ac/Dc's "Whole Lot of Rosie"... Big & Rich's "Ride a Cowboy" it's promptly eclipsed by Deep Purple's "Highway Star"... It's a duty I take seriously. My loyalty to ROCK is my honor!

Up here in the northeast (Maine) the classic rock stations are still clearly the most popular. WBLM is far and away the most listened to station in the state.
They do the Superbowl of RNR which now is done over a full week.
Right now they are doing their yearly A to Z from their archive basement. It's been going on for two and a half weeks now (they hit "S" yesterday), and they expect "T" alone to go 3 days. They play plenty of deep cuts from Zappa to Dead. In fact, folks are encouraged to e-mail or call in deep cuts from their favorite band, and most are honored and played.
Long Live Classic Rock.

Speaking of the Super Bowl. If classic rock was dying, would the NFL get Springsteen, The Who, McCartney, The Rolling Stones, ect...to do the half time show?
