FRANK MARINO AND MAHOGANY RUSH Real Live (Just A Minute!)
This double live CD (with a whopping 160 minutes worth of recorded material) should have come with a warning sticker - "For guitar enthusiasts only." Containing not so much songs as improvisational jam sessions, classic Marino tracks and many covers (including a couple of Hendrix songs unsurprisingly) are used as the basis for the Canadian axe hero to wax eloquently (and lengthily!) on his guitar. Rock, jazz, blues, flamenco, psychedelic - all bases are covered by Marino with ease and obvious skill. Recorded in the band's hometown of Montreal, it's pretty obvious that the night was very much a local boy love-fest considering the passionate response that can be heard, even at the conclusion of the draining marathon set. Unquestionably, for some this will be as welcome as a root canal, but for those with an ear for progressive flourishes and extended string bending, this will be nirvana.

I like Frank Marino, myself. But Nirvana? I think not. This is one of the best sounding live recordings I've yet to hear. It really is hard to take off after you turn it on.
