It was a toss up between 2112, Fly By Night and Grace Under Pressure. I went with 2112.

I voted for Farewell to Kings. However it is HARD to beat the run of 2112 - Moving Pictures. Those albums are ALL must haves.
If I were to REALLY honest I would probaly have to pick the ST album. I know Neil isn't on it and it is just plain old hard rock.....BUT I cut my "guitar teeth" learning that album. Every tune is cool and fun to play. In the past I have done
Finding My Way In the Mood What Your Doin' Woking Man
in bands I have been in. I think it is underrated and overlooked BUT i cannot say it is better than Farewell to Kings.

Really hard cal for me, close one between Farewell To Kings & Permanent Waves ... Probably my first Rush album was All The Worlds A Stage ... Loved it! Actually bought it in '78 ... Then got Farewell .... & really loved that too! Then P/Waves was released, got tickets for UK tour date in Portsmouth (UK), then they cancelled the Portsmouth gig .... They rescheduled it for a date in Southampton (About 20 miles from Portsmouth), the same night Lizzy were playing Portsmouth .... Sorry! Lizzy were probably my fav band live, ever! Sadly, these days a shadow of their former selves ... I've actually only got to see Rush live 4 times, first time was Moving Pictures ..., caught them only a few times since ... Thought Vapor Trails tour was possibly my fav to be honest, probably as I hadn't seen them in a while, made it all the more special. Al

I had to go with 2112 because I thought back to my teen years & how blown away I was by the whole album's sound & Concept. I never heard Rush(this was around '77 ) & I was at a record outlet sale where I picked up a 45 of "Temples of Syrinx" for 33 cents. I couldn't believe the energy packed in that 2 minute time frame so I bought the whole album a few days later. I agree with everything Speedy says except I preferred 2112 over 'A Farewell to Kings' by a hair. That first album is also one of my favorites & often wonder what they would've been like had Peart not been hired.(Nothing against Peart as he is legendary but I've always wondered).
I also love 'Caress of Steel', 'Fly By Night',& 'Permanent Waves'. Hemisheres was a bit of a disappointing follow up to Kings for me although it did have some moments.'Moving Pictures' was the end of the line for me(& I didn't really care for 'Moving Pictures)until 'Hold Your Fire' for me which was the last album I liked by them

A Farewell to Kings, although I do love Moving Pictures as well. Actually, I feel that the run from their debut through Signals is absolute perfection and all are absolute essentials.

I can really relate to Bucky's comments on 2112.
That's my choice, with Farewell to Kings a very close second.
In High School (circ 1979-1981) there was this dude in my art class that often wore a Rush T-shirt. When I inquired about what the heck is "Rush"? He explained that Rush is a rock band (gawd was I a nerd). He went on to say they weren't like a regular rock band, but kind of "intellectual" and different. He suggested 2112 to check them out. That summer of 1979 was awesome with that as the soundtrack. I suddenly transformed into a cool, beach bum-rock'n-sand-sculpture-artist. Rock'n out to 2112 and making dolphins out of sand really did work to attract the babes! GREAT TIMES!

I could never find one as engaging as "Hemispheres". But I love all the early stuff, "All the World's A Stage" would be a close second.
