WOW, tough question for me, but I am going with Kansas on this one...
I love Kansas and listen to them often.
I love Styx, but more to the early side of their career, including the Wooden Nickel years...up to about Pieces of Eight, after that they fall off somewhat for me. Although I was ok with the last studio album of original music, it wasn't complete enough for me.
Kansas, I love everything from the early days right up to the most recent things they've released. They went through the period without Steve Walsh, which kind of was a low, but since then, they've been great for me again.

Really tough!
I love them both, but I think Kansas wins because they have a stronger total out put, plus, "Leftoverture" is about as perfect an album as they come!

KANSAS - Some of the best lyrics ever written

While Styx had some great songs throughout their 70's albums, Kansas really put out five of my favorite albums of the 70's. Great band, they managed to combine the true art rock of Yes with the great hooks of the other AOR bands of the day. Steve Walsh is one of my favorite vocalists of all time.

Really tough! I love them both, but I think Kansas wins because they have a stronger total out put, plus, "Leftoverture" is about as perfect an album as they come! I disagree with this assessment. Kansas had one great album, "Leftoverture" and two very good ones, "Kansas", and "Point of Know return" Styx hit homeruns for 4 albums in a row. "Equinox" "Crystal Ball" "Grand Illusion" and "Pieces of Eight" before taking on water with Cornerstone. Even "Paradise Theatre" has 3 or 4 top notch songs IMO.

Actually 'Monolith' is a great album to. I prefer Kansas. Styx had some really good stuff and both bands had similar keyboard, and guitar sounds. I think Kansas had stronger material and took more chances. Although Kansas started to get pretty week with 'Audio Visions'.....but they also never put out 'Kilroy Was Here'.

I pretty much HATE both bands.
I HATE DDY's vocals....Walsh is one of the WORST frontmen of all time...a REAL DORK. Only Kevin Cronin is a bigger DOUCHE on stage.
Taht being said, STYX had some good stuff early on, 4 or 5 albums worth. KANSAS has enough good songs to fill ONE CD through their whole career.
STYX by far....even though both bands suck....unless you are a GIRL of course.

I agree Monolith is a great album, especially Stay Out of Trouble. I also really like their "Song for America" album too. I know alot don't like the Kilroy album which I'm not a big fan of but I did pick up the Caught in the Act DVD which was finally released. I know on Behind the Music the band wasn't too happy with that tour but I kind of liked the whole live show which was on the DVD which I seen on MTV when it first came out in '83/'84. The new DVD is cool because it has 12 extra videos

Complex composition, outstanding musicianship, meaningful lyrics...nothing to compare to the sophistication of KISS, I suppose. And for the record...Walsh is not a "frontman". He was a keyboard player, who sang lead vocals on half their songs. (That was in their prime. What happened after Kerry Livgren left, I can't account for.) If there was a "frontman" in Kansas, it was Robby Steinhardt. As far as being a "douche"...you may very well be right on that. (I'm assuming that you've met him.) The first time I met Steve, he did come off as a fairly arrogant d*ckhead. But then again, he had some substance abuse problems and so forth (he was hammered before the show) at the time. At least the man had a killer voice (at one time)...and a possible excuse for being a "douche". The second time I met him, he was as nice as could be. So...50/50, I guess. Of course, the boys in KISS could never be accused of being "douches". And BTW, I couldn't fill a f*ckin' EP with decent KISS songs, personally. Below average musicianship (and I'm being kind here)...and lyrics that a 10 year-old with his first boner would write...hey, what's not to like? Although, I am man enough to give props where props are due. Never has there been a band that took basically ZERO talent and turned it into success like KISS has. I'll give 'em that much. Styx had a ton of good music, too. Just to throw that in there. But the again, I'm a "GIRL" I guess...so what do I know?

This is tough. I like both bands enough to waste time and a 120 cassette tape putting together a "Best Of" for each of them. I probably listen to the Kansas one more because I hear most of the great Styx songs on the radio still. Kansas only gets 3 spots on the Classic Rock rotation. I saw Kansas once with Walsh as frontman and I thought he was pretty good in that role. A co-worker met Walsh in a dive bar at the Jersey Shore. Said Walsh was super nice and completely down to Earth. Although it is hard to act like hot shit when you're playing at a dive bar at the jersey shore.

As far a a DOUCHE goes I was speaking of the stage presence of those individuals. Intellectually, it's rock and roll, none of the bands are changing the world.....if you think any of them are making a difference in the world you need to see a doctor. Bands like Priest and KISS do just as much good for their fans as a band like Kansas. It all depends on what part of your life they touch. I surely don't need any "lessons" from my rock and roll.
