When it first came out I hated it. But the more I listen to it over the years the more I like it. It has some cool guitar solos & grooves. What do you think about it?

it was my fav of theirs when it came out, and its still my fav. Rust in Peace is my favorite. Like I posted before when Cryptic Writings first came out I hated it. It came out way before I played guitar, bass, or drums. I think once I started playing guitar, bass, & drums I liked it more an more for the melodies, grooves, & solos. Also there are some cool lyric on it too.

I bought "Cryptic.." when it first came out. Its a good Metal album and has some good songs, but when you compare it to the first 4 albums it doesn't hold up.

I bought "Cryptic.." when it first came out. Its a good Metal album and has some good songs, but when you compare it to the first 4 albums it doesn't hold up. First Killing was some raw abrasive thrash that put Megadeth on the radar. But it wasn't Megadeth's best. No doubt if you compare Cryptic Writings to Peace Sells,So Far, So Good, or Rust. It doesn't hold up to those albums. They progressed thrash metal as a genre. Cryptic Writings wasn't a thrash metal album. That is why I hated when it first came out because I wanted my balls out thrash Megadeth. Cryptic Writings was more experimental heavy blues rock with metal elements. On it's own I think Cryptic Writings holds up pretty good. I think this was Marty Friedman most innovation work with Megadeth. But these are just my opinions.

I liked "Cryptic Writings" almost immediately and it is still one of my favs of theirs. Now, the reason I liked it right away probably has to do with Megadeth's preceding album "Youthanasia", an album that I didn't like for the longest time until one day something clicked in my head and I "got it". But anyhow, with not liking "Youthanasia", I bought CW with somewhat lowered expectations and the album blew me away.

Youthanasia is actually my fave 'Deth album. Absolutely love it. I love it now too, but when it came out, I dunno.....I hate to repeat myself in vague terms, but the truth is: I just didn't "get it".

That really surprises me, mate. Youthanasia is probably their most immediate album. I know that a lot of 'Deth fans don't care for it too much but I think it's a stormer and it grabbed me immediately. Reckoning Day is such a superb song.

Youthanasia is actually my fave 'Deth album. Absolutely love it. Me too. God, I love that album (and up until YOUTHANASIA, I would have cited SO FAR, SO GOOD, SO WHAT as my favorite). CRYPTIC WRITINGS was a great follow-up -- not quite as strong, but close. I dig the hell out of it. Just picked up a copy last week, in fact, after not owning it for many years (last time I owned CRYPTIC WRITINGS, I had the *cassette*, if that tells ya anything). J.N.

I didnt know they were still making cassettes when it came out in 1997.

I never really gave Youthanasia a chance. I skipped it after Countdown was rammed down my throat. I like Countdown but I was sick of it. I guess its time for me to give Youthanasia a chance.

I actually love 'Youthanasia' as well. I think I liked it alot based on the same reason Jesse liked CW, because I did not really care for 'Countdown To Extinction'. 'Youthanasia' seemed liked a heavier crushing album while alot of CTE seemed more sterile.

'Youthanasia' seemed liked a heavier crushing album while alot of CTE seemed more sterile. That is how I felt about CTE. I thought it was to watered down. It lacked the rawness of the first four. So I thought Youthanasia would just continue on CTE's formula.

My fave before Youthanasia was also So Far, So Good....So What? There is some serious guitar work on that album and Hook In Mouth is absolutely vicious.
I don't mind Countdown... but, as has been said, the production was way too 'clean'. That surprised me as Max Norman is usually a great producer for fat, chunky sonics. He corrected it with Youthanasia though, I'm happy to say. When CTE got it right [Symphony Of Destruction] it was superb.
