I really don't like this kind of metal at all. It's too involved and, to me at least, is 'for the sake of it'. Give me traditional Power Metal any day of the week.
I'd also argue quite strongly that Trans Siberian Orchestra are nothing but a supremely talented, traditional hard rock band. Certainly not 'Symphonic Power Metal'. Whatever that is.

Can "Symphonic Rock" best be described as the combining of rock and classical music traditions?...
Just curious?
Thanks Kim

I originally agreed with this statement, however, this weekend I listened to TSO's "Beethoven's Last Night" and Stratovarius' "The 4th Dimension" in succession. My conclusion is that if Stratovarius qualifies as a Symphonic Metal band, then so does TSO. My girlfriend thought we were still listening to TSO.

I dig Kamelot, cuz a lot of their songs have a simpler structure to them then a lot of the other bands on your list. They are more like Queensryche than anything else.

Avantasia/Edguy Blind Guardian Nightwish Stratovarius Shadow Gallery Royal Hunt Revolution Renaissance Symphony X Ayreon/Star One Freedom Call Helloween Gamma Ray Sonata Arctica Lana Lane ... I'm a big fan of Tolkki's work in both Revolution Renaissance & Stratovarius. Shadow Gallery is from Lehigh Valley, PA. I use to live across the river from them. I believe at first they went by Sorcerer. Their name came from V for Vendetta novel.

I dig Helloween, Gamma Ray, Stratovarius, Savatage (their latter-day albums certainly qualify as "Symphonic Rock/Metal"), and TSO. I also have time for Kamelot, Hammerfall and Freedom Call. Beyond those, I actually find the genre a little repetitive.

A milestone. I've finally read an extensive list of bands here that I've not only never heard a note from but I've not heard of them at all. ('cept one) I'm wondering what rock is this!?
