In your opinion does Joe Satriani's or Steve Via's music have more feeling?

Satriani, no doubt. Steve Vai is just too clinical.

I won't vote on this because I like them both equally...depending on the day. I like Satriani, who I think is more melodic and structured, on some days, and I like Vai's absolute, out in left field attack, on other days.

Don't particularly care for either. I saw Joe live and it bored me to tears. 3 songs into it and I'm like, "Ok, the guy can fuckin' play, but can he make it interesting?" The answer, an hour and a half later was "No".
I saw Vai only as part of the Zappa Plays Zappa show. He only played on a few songs, but was AWESOME in his role. I know that's not representative of his solo works, but it qualifies as the tie-breaker for me.

I went with Steve Vai. I was familiar with that he worked with Zappa in the early 80's & was I was a fan of Zappa but never really looked beyond him being one of the players on those early 80's albums. When he hooked up w/ David Lee Roth I really took notice.I seen Roth on the Eat'em & Smile tour & was blown away by the combination of he & Billy Sheehan & I preferred Vai to Eddie Van Halen. I was disappointed that Roth's band ended but was psyched that he joined Whitesnake & enjoyed 'Slip of the Tongue'. I picked up his 'Flexible' album around this time & thought it was great but like Satriani's 'Surfin with the Alien" (which I also thought was great) the 2 albums just became dust collectors once the novelty of them wore off. Besides hard rock/metal during that mid/late 80's era I was also heavilly into Punk & New Wave.I was surprised when I found out around '89 that Vai played guitars on Johnny Lydon's(Johnny Rotten) 'PIL' album that was released a few years earlier which I was a huge fan of (I had the casette & don't even know if the musicians were listed on the liner notes so I had no idea Vai was the guitarist)
With all those credentials behind him in my opinion Vai definitely plays with more feeling

Joe Satriani by miles for me. Both are great guitarists. Only one is a great writer, & can achieve his goals with warmth & melody. Guess which one?
