Back in the day I had fun listening to Venom, Death Angel, Sacred Reich,Overkill, King Diamond, & I was really into Anthrax up to & including Among the Living(Spreading the Disease,Fistfull of Metal, & Metal Thrashing Mad.I loved Metallica's 'Kill 'em All' back then also. I never was totally hardcore into it but liked what I liked. Occasionally I still listen to the Aforementioned bands but prefer good old hard rock & NYC punk from the 70's.
I will say that I never understood what people seen in Cannibal Corpse. I used to see them back in the 80's & the only reason I went was because my friends band would open for them

But at 32 I'm still a thrash nut. It is what I cut my teeth on as a musician & what led me to learn other genres of metal such as death metal, black metal, power metal, & other styles of music such as late 70's early 80's punk, traditional Hungarian music & classical music. Metal in general is my favorite genre of rock & the reason I wanted to play. People told me as I got older that would change so far they've be wrong. I love it even more now that I have so many genres to draw from when I come up with my own music.

I love Opeth. They are classified as a Scandinavian death metal band, but I see them more as progressive metal ala Dream Theater, though with a bit more edge and the occasional cookie monster vocal. Check them out.
Beyond that, I don't listen to any extreme metal.

Nothing of that genre makes any sense to me, so no, I stay away from it.

They have the musicianship close to Dream Theater though IMO with more feel at times. If you like prog check out Gojira or Cynic.

I used to love Thrash, still do in a nostalgic sense. I can't stomach the rest.

Not I. I find that by watching the evening news gives me my fill of depression, anger, disillusionment, feelings of hopelessness, frustration, angst, depression, and a whole whack of other "lesser than happy" emotions. After that, I can turn off the tv and slap on some Status Quo and realize that life isn't so bad knowing that there are others out there in the world doing their damndest to put a smile on my face and recharge my batteries to ward off the ensuing doom and gloom surely to arrive again the next day. No "Death Metal" for me thanks!...but yes, I'd love another beer!... Thanks Kim
