In what might just be one of the most important legal decision in Florida's history – almost certainly more important than the ones that gave George Bush the presidency in 2000 - a court has upheld a woman's right to mount political protests by exposing her breasts.
Elizabeth Book was arrested for baring her breasts in 2004, under a law that banned acts of indecency in public, including women going topless
The law she was protesting against, of course, was the same anti-toplessness law under which she was arrested.
While the court made no judgement on the rights or wrongs of the law against women showing their breasts, it did decide that if women were showing their breasts as part of a legitimate political protest against laws banning women from showing their breasts, then they were allowed to show their breasts.
In reaching that decision, it upheld an earlier ruling from a county court that also agreed with the breast-baring.
Book's attorney heralded the topless ruling a victory for his client, who claimed that the laws were unfair as men were allowed to walk around topless, while women were not.

The one and only law passed a few years ago by our then Conservative Provincial government of Ontario at the time that I actually agreed with was the right for women to go topless in this province if they so desired. I remember the uproar it caused and that there would be chaos in the streets, on the beaches, in public places...etc. Now I may not get out much but over the years since this ruling was upheld in favour of women exercising their right to do so, I have only witnessed this on 2 occasions where this took place. Both times at our local waterfront as these free spirits actually had their tops off while roller blading on the bike path. Sad to say...all that lovely chaos never did come to pass. Doh!!! Go figure? Thanks Kim

I agree Kim...I too have been waiting for the chaos to ensue...nothing has happened...
It's the same with everything...I want, I want, I want....finally someone gives in and gives it to you, and you don't really want it in the first place...
Women in Ontario were after the right to go topless for YEARS if they so desired...they finally got their wish, as Kim mentioned, and don't all come running to Ontario to see the rukus...it barely ever happens, if at all...I have HEARD that at the local beaches in the Ottawa area it happens from time to time, but nothing like anyone would have thought....

I really believe that now with the law passed, it's up to concerned citizens of this province such as Rush and myself to perhaps consider launching awareness and promotional campaigns to keep this law intact and encourage women to exercise their right to do so. Thanks Kim

I think it's time to spur the women of Maine into action! I know I would support the measure and promise to show up at every protest event scheduled.
